In general, the early Fathers tended to use the terms \"devil\" and \"demon\" somewhat interchangeably, but there were some distinctions that emerged. The devil, often identified as Satan or Lucifer, was typically seen as the chief fallen angel \u2013 the leader of the rebellious spirits who were cast out of heaven. Demons, on the other hand, were understood as the multitude of lesser evil spirits under the devil's command.<\/p>\n
Many of the Fathers, drawing on Jewish apocalyptic literature and certain New Testament passages, developed the idea that demons were the disembodied spirits of the Nephilim \u2013 the offspring of fallen angels and human women mentioned in Genesis 6.
