Credit: Mohammad Al-Rifai\/ACI MENA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In his homily before the funeral prayers, Yazigi condemned the attack as a \u201cheinous massacre,\u201d stressing that \u201cthe prayer we lift today is not an ordinary funeral prayer but the special resurrection prayer we usually offer on Easter \u2014 because today is a day of resurrection.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cThis crime is the first of its kind in Damascus since 1860. We will not allow anyone to sow sectarian strife; Syrians are all committed to national unity. It is unfortunate that no government officials, aside from Minister Hind Kabawat [a Christian], came to the site of the attack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following the funeral liturgy, the coffins were taken to St. Elias Church, the site of the bombing, for a special prayer before being buried in the Christian cemetery.<\/p>\n<p>Later in the afternoon, the Vatican Press Office released a statement expressing that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/264971\/pope-leo-xiv-deeply-saddened-by-islamist-attack-on-a-church-in-damascus\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Pope Leo XIV was \u201cdeeply saddened by the attack.\u201d<\/a> The Holy Father extended his heartfelt solidarity with all those affected by the tragedy, assuring prayers for the repose of the souls of the deceased, healing for the wounded, and divine consolation and peace for their families.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"mx-auto\" style=\"width:100%\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/admin.catholicnewsagency.com\/images\/d84a3299.jpg?quality=80&#038;ssl=1\" class=\"img-fluid\" style=\"null\" alt=\"Mourners gather in the Church of the Holy Cross in Qassaa, Damascus, for the funeral of many who lost their lives in a terrorist attack at the Mar Elias Church in the Dweila neighborhood of Syria&#039;s capital on Sunday, June 22, 2025. Several Christian and civil society groups also organized prayer vigils and demonstrations in Christian neighborhoods, where participants chanted: \u201cChristians do not fear death, for after death comes resurrection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, amid these displays of faith and resilience, Syrian Christians have expressed mounting frustration at the government\u2019s failure to declare a national mourning period, lower the flags, or refer to the victims as \u201cmartyrs\u201d in official or media statements. Many view this as a grave injustice, feeling that the blood of Christian victims was not being honored equally.<\/p>\n<p>In a poignant public message, Metropolitan Ephrem Maalouli of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Aleppo and Alexandretta addressed President Ahmed al-Sharaa, saying: \u201cWe had hoped to hear from you, Mr. President, words of healing \u2014 words that would reach every free Syrian home and comfort every Christian ear. Words that would honor the martyrs, console the bereaved, and tend the wounds of those in hospital beds. Sharaa reportedly responded: \u201cI will come to you as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To this, Patriarch Yazigi responded: \u201cWith love, respect, and appreciation, Your Excellency, we thank you for the phone call \u2014 but it is not enough.
