Hilario Gonz\u00e1lez Garc\u00eda, the bishop of Saltillo, Mexico, since 2021, recently made the pilgrimage to Rome for the Jubilee of Seminarians, Bishops, and Priests held June 23\u201327. The prelate shared the highlights of his visit to the Eternal CIty and in particular the reasons why, despite the risks, it\u2019s worthwhile to be a priest in his country.<\/p>\n

During the last 30 years, at least 80 priests have been murdered<\/a> in Mexico, making the nation one of the most dangerous in the world for exercising priestly ministry. Speaking with ACI Prensa, CNA\u2019s Spanish-language news partner, Gonz\u00e1lez responded with hope to this painful reality.<\/p>\n

\u2018We must not be afraid to give our lives for Christ\u2019<\/h2>\n

\u201cMexico is the country where good priests are happy giving their lives for Christ and for his Church,\u201d Gonz\u00e1lez said.<\/p>\n

He also emphasized that the priestly vocation, even in difficult contexts, allows a priest to offer the best of himself: \u201cThis is much more valuable than any human, economic, or sociopolitical project, because it opens horizons of fulfillment and overcomes the selfish and arrogant tendency that the world proposes today.\u201d<\/p>\n

In this context, he encouraged those who feel called to the priesthood to respond with generosity: \u201cI invite those who feel called to be honest and transparent in their aspirations, and, trusting in the grace and mercy of the Lord, to take the first step of their vocational journey by saying \u2018yes\u2019 to the invitation of Jesus.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou shouldn\u2019t be afraid of giving your life for Christ nor be afraid of offering it in priestly service,\u201d he emphasized.<\/p>\n

Meetings with Pope Leo XIV<\/h2>\n

The prelate recounted to ACI Prensa the details of his \u201cedifying\u201d experience in Rome, which served to \u201cstrengthen and encourage the spiritual bond\u201d as well as an opportunity to give thanks for the \u201cgift of life, of the priestly vocation, and of the episcopal ministry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Coinciding with his 60th birthday, the 30th anniversary of his priestly ordination, and the 10th anniversary of his episcopal ministry, the Mexican bishop traveled \u201cas a pilgrim\u201d to the Eternal City.<\/p>\n

Throughout the week, Gonz\u00e1lez was able to hear Pope Leo XIV on four occasions. The first was during the meeting with the seminarians, which reminded him of his service as a formator and the \u201cgreat responsibility involved in accompanying candidates in their initial formation process.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also participated in the audience with the bishops<\/a>. He was particularly moved by the Holy Father\u2019s address, which included \u201cthe invitation to be men of theological life\u201d and to \u201cremain firm in the faith, convinced of God\u2019s help so as not to lose hope and thus encourage others in times of trial,\u201d Gonz\u00e1lez told ACI Prensa.<\/p>\n

Regarding the International Vocational Meeting, he emphasized the importance of the pope\u2019s call \u201cto be more purposeful, with the witness of a life happily given over\u201d to the Lord. Regarding the Mass that Leo XIV celebrated on the solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on June 27, during which he ordained 32 priests<\/a>, the bishop of Saltillo emphasized Pope Leo\u2019s invitation to \u201cfulfill the promises we made on the day of our ordination.\u201d<\/p>\n

Commenting on Pope Leo\u2019s words on celibacy, which during his address to the bishops the pontiff said is more than living a celibate life, Gonz\u00e1lez emphasized that it is not merely \u201ca discipline or rule\u201d or \u201ca superhuman effort\u201d but rather \u201ca supernatural gift to pray for, accept, and cultivate, and a response that frees us to serve with the joy that springs from a heart that knows it is deeply loved.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, this means that I have to \u2018put more effort\u2019 into my consecration to the Lord, be more humble and transparent in my interpersonal relationships, and continue to bind myself with ever greater dedication and joy to the heart of Jesus,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Combatting abuse in the Church<\/h2>\n

During the meeting with the bishops, Pope Leo XIV also encouraged them to be \u201cfirm and decisive\u201d in addressing abuse. The Mexican prelate stated that the bishops in his country are faithfully carrying out these instructions \u201cto protect minors and to prevent such behavior from occurring.\u201d<\/p>\n

Each diocese in Mexico, according to the bishop of Saltillo, provides \u201chuman and institutional resources to ensure safe environments in our communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also highlighted the importance of the proper formation of seminarians and priests as well as those in consecrated life and communities, \u201cto respond honestly and seek to purify attitudes that go against the righteous living of Christian life in all areas.\u201d<\/p>\n

Challenges facing the Church <\/strong><\/h2>\n

The bishop noted that, in the Diocese of Saltillo, they are \u201ctrying to respond to the challenge of selfish individualism\u201d that prevents people\u2019s hearts \u201cfrom loving and serving generously, which withers interpersonal relationships, thus weakening the fabric of community and society.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also emphasized that they are \u201cin tune with the synodal experience\u201d and are working to \u201crecover the identity and joy of the filial experience with God.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe see the social consequences of individualism in the disintegration of people (through abandonment, vices, addictions, loss of personal and family life), in violence and cruelty in interpersonal relationships, and in indifference and selfishness in helping those in need. We try to take up these challenges with simplicity of heart and with God\u2019s grace to help build his kingdom in our society,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
