For Christians, who are called to worship God in spirit and in truth, understanding the world's second-largest religion is not merely an academic exercise; it is a matter of powerful spiritual importance. We are told to be wise as serpents and innocent as doves, to test every spirit, and to hold fast to what is good. But how can we do this when it comes to Islam?<\/p>\n

We are often told that Islam is a \"religion of peace,\" a sister faith to Christianity, and that its god, Allah, is the same God we worship. We are told that its prophet, Muhammad, was a wise leader and a man of God. Yet, at the same time, we see violence, intolerance, and oppression committed in its name across the globe. This deep and troubling contradiction leaves many faithful Christians feeling confused, uncertain, and even fearful. How can we reconcile these two opposing pictures? The central claim of Islam is that Muhammad was the final and greatest prophet of God. But when we examine his life through the lens of Islamic sources, as courageous critics have done, a deeply troubling picture emerges. It is a picture not of a divine messenger filled with God's peace of a man who was initially terrified of his own spiritual experiences, whose character seemed to decay over time, and whose actions often stand in stark opposition to the loving example of Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n

One of the most disturbing accounts concerns Muhammad\u2019s very first \"revelation.\" According to Islam's most trusted sources, his initial encounter with the spiritual realm did not fill him with divine peace with sheer terror. In his book \u0627\u0644\u062d\u0642\u064a\u0642\u0629 \u062d\u0648\u0644 \u0645\u062d\u0645\u062f<\/em>, historian Robert Spencer details how Muhammad, after this experience, was so frightened that he believed he had become demon-possessed.\u2075 He was suicidal and had to be comforted by his wife, Khadija, who assured him he was not a madman. This reaction stands in stark contrast to the divine encounters described in the Bible. While an encounter with God's holiness can be awesome and humbling, the overwhelming terror of demonic possession is a sign of a very different kind of spiritual source.<\/p>\n

This troubling beginning is compounded by what many critics, such as the 19th-century scholar Sir William Muir, describe as a \"tale of two Muhammads\".\u2079 These critics point to a dramatic and negative shift in Muhammad's character and teachings after he moved from Mecca to Medina. In Mecca, he was a preacher, often facing rejection and persecution. His message during this period contained some verses that could be interpreted as peaceful. But after he gained military and political power in Medina, his character and message changed radically. He became, in the words of his critics, a warlord who used conveniently timed \"revelations\" to justify violence, political assassinations, and personal desires.\u2079 Spencer describes this as an evolution from a \"preacher of hellfire and damnation into a political and military leader who expanded his rule by force of arms\".\u00b9\u00b3<\/p>\n

This shift from preacher to warlord is essential to understanding the core of Islam. The Islamic principle of abrogation holds that later revelations from Allah cancel out and replace earlier ones. Critics argue that this means the violent, political, and intolerant verses revealed in Medina supersede the more peaceful verses from Mecca. Therefore, they contend that the final and most authentic form of Islam is not the \"peaceful\" version but the militant and expansionist one that took shape in Medina. This theological point dismantles the common argument that Islam is fundamentally a religion of peace that has been \"hijacked\" by extremists. When judged by the moral standards of the Judeo-Christian tradition, Muhammad's actions in Medina are deeply disturbing. Ayaan Hirsi Ali, who fled Islam and became a member of the Dutch parliament, has stated with chilling bluntness that by Western standards, Muhammad would be considered a \"tyrant\" and a \"pedophile\" for his marriage to a nine-year-old girl, Aisha.\u00b9\u2074 Scholar Ibn Warraq, who was raised a Muslim, echoes this sentiment, describing Muhammad as a \"sexual monster\" and a \"cunning manipulator of people and events\" based on his analysis of the earliest Islamic biographies.\u00b9\u2076<\/p>\n

This leads to a final, devastating summary of Muhammad's legacy. Robert Spencer concludes that the life of Muhammad has directly motivated \"terrorism, pedophilia, misogyny, inhuman punishments\u2026 And religious intolerance\".\u00b9\u2077 The contrast with Jesus Christ could not be more powerful. As commentator Douglas Murray puts it, \"The founder of Christianity preached compassion and practiced nonviolence.
