Pope Leo XIV spoke on the phone with President Mahmoud Abbas of Palestine, who called the pope on Monday morning regarding the conflict in Gaza and the West Bank. <\/p>\n

According to the Vatican, the Holy Father repeated his appeal<\/a> for the protection of \u201ccivilians and sacred places\u201d during his conversation with the Palestinian president. <\/p>\n

Besides reiterating his concern that international humanitarian law be \u201cfully respected,\u201d the pope specifically called for the prohibition of the \u201cindiscriminate use of force\u201d and the \u201cforced transfer\u201d of people in the region.<\/p>\n

He also emphasized \u201cthe urgent need to provide assistance to those most vulnerable to the consequences of the conflict and to allow the adequate entry of humanitarian aid,\u201d according to the Holy See Press Office. <\/p>\n

The Monday phone call between Leo and Abbas comes one day after Palestine\u2019s president launched an international contact campaign<\/a> to world leaders and international organizations to stop the destruction of Gaza and end the \u201ccrime of starvation\u201d against its people.<\/p>\n

\u0641\u064a \u0628\u064a\u0627\u0646<\/a> published on Palestine\u2019s official X account Monday, the president called for an end to \u201csettler terrorism\u201d and \u201cattacks on Christian and Islamic holy sites in the West Bank, including Jerusalem.\u201d <\/p>\n

The Vatican said the 10th anniversary of the \u201cComprehensive Agreement between the Holy See and the State of Palestine<\/a>,\u201d signed on June 26, 2015, was also discussed at the end of the conversation.<\/p>\n

This month, religious leaders and diplomats representing 20 countries denounced acts of violence against Christians in the West Bank village of Taybeh after Israeli settlers set fire to the cemetery of the fifth-century Church of St. George Al Khidr on July 7.<\/p>\n

Last week, an Israeli military operation<\/a> led to the deaths of three people and wounded many others at the Holy Family Church compound in Gaza. Israel said the city\u2019s only Catholic church was \u201cmistakenly hit\u201d and regretted the \u201cunintentional damage\u201d to the parish.<\/p>\n

Both the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa and Greek Orthodox Patriarch Theophilos III Jerusalem led an ecclesiastical delegation to Taybeh<\/a> on July 14 and \u063a\u0632\u0629<\/a> on July 18 as a sign of solidarity with local communities.<\/p>\n

According to the Palestinian government, approximately 59,000 people have been killed in Gaza, including more than 18,000 children and 10,000 women since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war on Oct. 7, 2023.<\/p>\n

During a press conference held in Ramallah<\/a>, West Bank, on Monday, Palestine\u2019s prime minister Mohammad Mustafa said \u201cGaza has been turned into a graveyard for children.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cOur children are being targeted, killed, injured, starved to death, and deprived of the most basic rights: food, clean water, shelter, safety, and education,\u201d Mustafa said. \u201cIsrael continues to use starvation as a weapon of war.\u201d<\/p>\n
