U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced that he has issued a directive aimed at reforming the military\u2019s Chaplain Corps, beginning with the elimination of the U.S. Army\u2019s current Spiritual Fitness Guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u0641\u064a video post<\/a>, Hegseth described a \u201creal problem\u201d facing the nation\u2019s military forces: \u201cthe weakening of our Chaplain corps\u201d that has \u201cbeen going on for far too long.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn an atmosphere of political correctness and secular humanism, chaplains have been minimized, viewed by many as therapists. instead of ministers,\u201d he said. \u201cFaith and virtue were traded for self help and self care.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hegseth said that \u201cchaplains are intended to be the spiritual and moral backbone of our nation\u2019s forces,\u201d recalling that at the outset of the American Revolution, General George Washington, in one of his first acts as commander of the Continental Army, established the Chaplain Corps because he saw the need for \u201cthe blessing and protection of heaven\u2026especially in times of public distress and danger<\/a>\".<\/p>\n

\u201cFor about 200 years, the Chaplain Corps continued its role as the spiritual leader of our service members. serving our men and women in times of hardship, and ministering to their souls,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

In what he described as an \u201congoing war on warriors\u201d in recent years, Hegseth said the role of chaplains \u201chas been degraded.\u201d<\/p>\n

He cited the current Army Spiritual Fitness Guide<\/a>, which he says mentions God only once and has \u201czero\u201d references to virtue, relying instead \u201con New Age notions, saying that the soldier\u2019s spirit consists of consciousness, creativity, and connection.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the guide, Hegseth said, about \u201c82% of the military are religious, yet, ironically, [the guide] alienates our war fighters of faith by pushing secular humanism. In short, it\u2019s unacceptable and unserious. So we\u2019re tossing it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur chaplains are chaplains, not emotional support officers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

According to Hegseth, the reforms will be \u201ca top down cultural shift, putting spiritual well-being on the same footing as mental and physical health.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said initial reforms will result in the removal of training materials that \u201chave no place in the War Department\u201d as well as the streamlining of religious affiliation coding practices, with more changes in the coming weeks and months.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to restore the esteemed position of chaplains as moral anchors for our fighting force,\u201d said Hegseth. Quoting the 1956 army chaplain\u2019s manual, Hegseth said: \u201c\u2018The chaplain is the pastor and the shepherd of the souls entrusted to his care.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a high and sacred calling,\u201d he continued, \u201cbut this only works if our shepherds are actually given the freedom to boldly guide and care for their flock.\u201d<\/p>\n
