Now that the Vatican has announced that Archbishop-designate Ronald Hicks will succeed<\/a> Cardinal Timothy Dolan as archbishop of New York, what comes next for the cardinal?<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll always keep working,\u201d Dolan told Father Dave Dwyer, a Paulist priest, executive director of Busted Halo Ministries<\/a>, and cohost of \u201cConversation with Cardinal Dolan<\/a>,\u201d during a discussion of his retirement plans earlier this year. <\/p>\n

\u201cFor a priest, your life is your work,\u201d he said, indicating that he hopes to continue preaching retreats, which he said he loves, and teaching. <\/p>\n

\u201cBut I won\u2019t have an appointment. I won\u2019t have administrative duties. Yippee!\u201d Dolan quipped.<\/p>\n

The cardinal said he is looking forward to having \u201cmore choices, instead of waking up in the morning and being handed a schedule.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShould I read? Should I take a longer walk than usual? Should I spend a longer time in my prayer?\u201d he mused.<\/p>\n

Dolan said his brother bishops told him years ago to \u201cmake sure you have hobbies you can engage in on a day off,\u201d and that advice has helped and will continue to help him in retirement.<\/p>\n

The cardinal told Dwyer whatever he does, he will have to ask the permission of his successor. \u201cI\u2019ll be one of his priests,\u201d Dolan said, laughing. \u201cI will ask him: \u2018Your Excellency, would it be OK if I\u2026?\u201d <\/p>\n

In addition, in an interview with Maria Bartiromo<\/a> on Fox Business this week Dolan revealed that he has received requests to teach at universities, to write a book, and to help with a documentary on the Catholic Church in the United States.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to appreciate the chance to set my own schedule,\u201d said Dolan, who has led the Archdiocese of New York since 2009.<\/p>\n
