Newsroom, Jun 24, 2025 \/ 17:07 pm (CNA).<\/p>\n<p>The Catholic Bishops\u2019 Conference of Japan, as \u201cthe only bishops from a country to have suffered atomic bombings in war,\u201d is urging the international community to abolish nuclear weapons once and for all in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II,\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbcj.catholic.jp\/2025\/06\/20\/32800\/\" target=\"null\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"> the bishops wrote in a June 20 statement<\/a>, \u201c[we] carry deeply engraved in our hearts the heavy history and pain that atomic bomb survivors and citizens of Hiroshima and Nagasaki have suffered, and hereby declare our strong commitment to the abolition of nuclear weapons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hiroshima is the site of the world\u2019s first atomic attack on Aug. 6, 1945, while Nagasaki was bombed three days later. The bombings resulted in the estimated deaths of 140,000 people in Hiroshima and 74,000 people in Nagasaki by the end of 1945 alone.<\/p>\n<p>In the years that followed, many of the survivors in Japan faced leukemia, cancers, and other terrible side effects from radiation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icanw.org\/hiroshima_and_nagasaki_bombings\" target=\"null\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Laut<\/a> the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.<\/p>\n<p>In their \u201cDeclaration on the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons 2025,\u201d the bishops of Japan pledged their commitment to \u201cconvey the reality of the atomic bombings to the world and declare the inhumanity of nuclear weapons\u201d as well as to \u201cstand in solidarity with domestic and international movements for the abolition of nuclear weapons and promote actions to achieve this goal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The statement came amid rising tensions in the Middle East over Iran\u2019s growing nuclear capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Two days after the statement\u2019s release, the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/264925\/pope-leo-xiv-after-us-bombings-in-iran-humanity-cries-out-and-pleads-for-peace\" target=\"null\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">carried out airstrikes on Iran\u2019s nuclear facilities<\/a>, with President Donald Trump announcing that the strikes had \u201cobliterated\u201d Iran\u2019s main nuclear sites with bunker-busting bombs.<\/p>\n<p>A ceasefire<a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/114734934153569653\" target=\"null\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"> has since been reached<\/a> between Israel and Iran, though the terms of the deal remain unclear and <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/live\/iran-israel-war-updates-6-24-2025\" target=\"null\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">reports<\/a> of initial violations have raised concerns over whether it will be possible to resolve the conflict in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe existence of nuclear weapons is a serious threat to all life, as it degrades the dignity of human beings and the world that God created to be very good,\u201d the bishops wrote, urging the international community to remember the lives lost during the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis tragedy must not be repeated,\u201d they said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The bishops pointed out that many still suffer the aftereffects of the bombings and that the environmental destruction caused by the explosions has continued to have \u201can enormous negative impact on global ecosystems.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The bishops further slammed nuclear deterrence as an \u201cineffective\u201d tactic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe concept of nuclear deterrence is not only an ineffective means of resolving conflicts, but it also plunges the world into a \u2018security dilemma\u2019 that in reality pushes the world toward the brink of nuclear war. We cannot tolerate this kind of thinking,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe use of nuclear weapons as a means of intimidation in any conflict situation should never be tolerated under international law and norms,\u201d they adding, stating: \u201cAs followers of the Gospel of Christ, we strongly urge the complete abolition of nuclear weapons in order to achieve peace through dialogue and to protect the life and dignity of all people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/264973\/japan-bishops-on-nuclear-bombs-this-tragedy-must-not-be-repeated\" rel=\"nofollow\">https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/264973\/japan-bishops-on-nuclear-bombs-this-tragedy-must-not-be-repeated<\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mass at a cathedral in Nagasaki, Japan, after the U.S. dropped a nuclear weapon on the city in August of 1945.
