The Michigan government this week released its fifth report on diocesan abuse in the state, detailing dozens of allegations against more than 50 priests in the Diocese of Grand Rapids. <\/p>\n

The report from the attorney general\u2019s office, released on Dec. 15<\/a>, comes after four other reports detailing abuse allegations in the dioceses of Lansing<\/a>, Kalamazoo<\/a>, Gaylord<\/a>, und Marquette<\/a>.  <\/p>\n

As with the other reports, the allegations detailed in the Grand Rapids investigation go back decades. The Dec. 15 report encompasses abuse allegations against \u201cpriests or deacons who are current or former clergy for the Diocese of Grand Rapids, that occurred in the diocese from Jan. 1, 1950, to the present,\u201d the review says. <\/p>\n

The alleged abuse reports were pulled from a variety of sources, including a government tip line, police investigations, and abuse reports disclosed by the diocese itself. <\/p>\n

The majority of the priests identified in the report \u2014 37 out of 51\u00a0\u2014 are \u201cknown or presumed to be dead,\u201d the report says, while none of the remaining 14 are in active ministry in the Grand Rapids Diocese. <\/p>\n

Nearly all of the potential criminal violations in the report occurred \u201cbefore 2002,\u201d it says. <\/p>\n

Most of the alleged abuse was reported to have occurred against \u201ceither boys or girls under the age of 16,\u201d though the state said some alleged abuse occurred against adults. <\/p>\n

In a video message<\/a> after the release of the report, Grand Rapids Bishop David Walkowiak offered his \u201cdeepest and most sincere apologies\u201d to the victims of clergy abuse there. <\/p>\n

The prelate commended \u201cthe courage that victim-survivors have to tell their stories,\u201d calling it a \u201ctestament to their strength and resilience.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cPriests are ordained to serve in the person of Christ himself, which makes the sexual abuse of minors incomprehensible and particularly harmful,\u201d he acknowledged.<\/p>\n

The bishop said the report partly inflates the number of victims by detailing \u201cconsensual relationships between priests and adults,\u201d which he pointed out are \u201cimmoral [but] not in violation of Michigan law.\u201d<\/p>\n

Walkowiak said the diocese has \u201ccooperated fully\u201d with the attorney general\u2019s office during the investigation. He noted that the diocese has implemented \u201cnumerous safeguards\u201d to protect children \u2014 including zero-tolerance protocols \u2014 and has \u201cdiligently upheld these practices for more than 20 years.\u201d <\/p>\n

State Attorney General Dana Nessel, meanwhile, said in a press statement on Dec. 15 that abuse survivors \u201cdeserve to be heard.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c[B]y releasing these reports, we hope to honor the courage of victims and ensure their experiences are no longer hidden,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

Reports on the Archdiocese of Detroit and the Diocese of Saginaw are still forthcoming from the state and are expected to be released at a later date. <\/p>\n
