Estudi\u00f3 en la escuela catedralicia de Colonia y, siendo a\u00fan un ni\u00f1o, fue nombrado preboste de las iglesias de San Jorge y San Severino en Colonia y de Santa Mar\u00eda en Aquisgr\u00e1n, ya que en aquella \u00e9poca era un abuso com\u00fan en la Iglesia nombrar a los hijos de los nobles para tales cargos.<\/p>\n<p>En 1199 fue elegido preboste de la catedral de Colonia. Llev\u00f3 una vida mundana y, en el conflicto entre los dos arzobispos, Adolfo y Bruno, se puso del lado de su primo Adolfo y libr\u00f3 una guerra en su nombre. El emperador Federico II, que hab\u00eda fijado su residencia permanentemente en Sicilia, entreg\u00f3 Alemania a su hijo, Enrique VII, entonces todav\u00eda menor de edad, y en 1221 nombr\u00f3 a Engelberto tutor del rey y administrador del imperio.
