Fue educada en la religi\u00f3n cristiana y se le ense\u00f1aron los sentimientos de perfecta piedad. Desde su infancia se distingui\u00f3 por una admirable dulzura de car\u00e1cter, modestia y devoci\u00f3n. <\/p>\n<p>Mostr\u00f3 un gran amor por el santo estado de la virginidad, y por su seriedad y su desprecio por los vestidos, adornos, diversiones y compa\u00f1\u00eda mundana, dio tempranas se\u00f1ales de su sincero deseo de llevar una vida celestial en la tierra. Su coraz\u00f3n se elev\u00f3 por encima del mundo antes de que se pensara que era capaz de conocerlo, de modo que sus diversiones, que suelen llenar la mente de los j\u00f3venes, no ten\u00edan encanto para ella, y cada d\u00eda de su vida continu\u00f3 creciendo en virtud.<\/p>\n<p>Las leyendas dicen que ten\u00eda solo doce a\u00f1os cuando se promulgaron los sangrientos edictos del emperador Diocleciano en el a\u00f1o 304, por los cuales se ordenaba que todas las personas, sin excepci\u00f3n de edad, sexo o profesi\u00f3n, fueran obligadas a ofrecer sacrificios a los dioses del imperio.<\/p>\n<p>Eulalia, aunque joven, tom\u00f3 la publicaci\u00f3n de esta orden como una se\u00f1al de batalla, pero su madre, al observar su impaciente ardor por el martirio, la llev\u00f3 al campo. Sin embargo, la joven santa encontr\u00f3 r\u00e1pidamente la manera de escapar por la noche y, tras mucho cansancio, lleg\u00f3 a M\u00e9rida antes del amanecer.<\/p>\n<p>Esa misma ma\u00f1ana, tan pronto como se reuni\u00f3 el tribunal, se present\u00f3 ante el cruel juez, cuyo nombre era Daciano, y le reproch\u00f3 su impiedad al intentar destruir almas oblig\u00e1ndolas a renunciar al \u00fanico Dios verdadero.<\/p>\n<p>El gobernador orden\u00f3 entonces que fuera capturada. Primero, empleando caricias, Daciano le present\u00f3 las ventajas que su nacimiento, juventud y fortuna le daban en el mundo, y el dolor que su desobediencia causar\u00eda a sus padres. Al ver que estas tentaciones no ten\u00edan efecto, comenz\u00f3 a amenazarla, colocando ante sus ojos los instrumentos de tortura m\u00e1s crueles, dici\u00e9ndole: \u201cDe todo esto te librar\u00e1s si tan solo tocas un poco de sal e incienso con la punta de tu dedo\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>Provocada por estos halagos seductores, tir\u00f3 el \u00eddolo, pisote\u00f3 el pastel que estaba dispuesto para el sacrificio y escupi\u00f3 al juez, una acci\u00f3n que solo se justifica por su juventud y falta de atenci\u00f3n bajo la influencia de un c\u00e1lido celo y el miedo a las trampas que se le tend\u00edan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Por orden del juez, dos verdugos comenzaron a desgarrar sus tiernos costados con ganchos de hierro, hasta dejar los huesos al descubierto. Mientras esto suced\u00eda, ella llamaba a los golpes los trofeos de Cristo. Luego, se aplicaron antorchas encendidas a sus pechos y costados: bajo cuyo tormento, en lugar de gemidos, no se escuch\u00f3 de su boca m\u00e1s que acciones de gracias. El fuego finalmente alcanz\u00f3 su cabello, rode\u00f3 su cabeza y rostro, y la santa fue asfixiada por el humo y la llama.<\/p>\n<p>La historia dice que una paloma blanca pareci\u00f3 salir de su boca y emprender el vuelo hacia arriba cuando la santa m\u00e1rtir expir\u00f3: ante tal prodigio, los verdugos quedaron tan aterrorizados que huyeron y abandonaron el cuerpo. <\/p>\n<p>Sus reliquias se guardan con gran veneraci\u00f3n en Oviedo, donde es honrada como patrona.
