In the same way, God&#39;s jealousy is for His own glory, which is stolen and dishonored by idols, and for our ultimate good, because He knows that idols will only lead us to ruin.\u00b9 The prophet Hosea powerfully develops this metaphor, portraying Israel&#39;s idolatry as spiritual adultery\u2014a powerful betrayal of their divine Husband.\u00b9<\/p>\n<p>The command also mentions &quot;visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation&quot;.\u00b9\u2076 This is not a threat of God arbitrarily punishing innocent children for their parents&#39; sins. Rather, it is a sober statement of spiritual and sociological reality. Hard work, providing for one&#39;s family, and seeking security are not inherently sinful. Our hearts are, as one reformer said, &quot;perpetual factories of idols.&quot; We identify one, fight against it, only to find another has sprung up in its place. If the solution depended on our own strength and willpower, we would be without hope. But the good news of the gospel is that the definitive cure for idolatry is not a strategy, but a person: Jesus Christ. He is God&#39;s perfect provision for our idolatrous hearts.<\/p>\n<h3>Jes\u00fas: La verdadera imagen de Dios<\/h3>\n<p>Our hearts long to see and know God, and this legitimate desire is what often gets twisted into the creation of physical idols. But in Jesus, that desire is perfectly and legitimately fulfilled. The Bible declares that Jesus is the &quot;image of the invisible God&quot; (Colossians 1:15). He is the one who makes the unseen God known to us.\u00b3\u2075 In Jesus, we have the one and only &quot;idol&quot; we are commanded to worship\u2014the perfect, living, breathing representation of God Himself. God promises that He will always provide a &quot;way out&quot; so that we can endure temptation and choose Him instead (1 Corinthians 10:13).\u2074\u00b3<\/p>\n<p>The final cure for the disease of idolatry is the new heart that God promises in the Old Testament and provides through the New Covenant in Christ. &quot;And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh&quot; (Ezekiel 36:26).
