The first lady of the U.S. state known as \u201cThe Land of Lincoln,\u201d MK Pritzker, accompanied the governor during his visit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was an honor for MK and me to meet with @Pontifex \u2014 a son of Illinois \u2014 to express the pride and reverence of the people of this great state,\u201d Pritzker said following the meeting in a social media <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovPritzker\/status\/1991086220118536506?s=20\" target=\"null\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">publicaci\u00f3n<\/a>. The governor added: \u201cPope Leo XIV\u2019s message of hope, compassion, unity, and peace resonates with Illinoisans of all faiths and traditions.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A statement from the governor\u2019s office said: \u201cAs the first American pope, a native Illinoisan, and an advocate for the poor and less fortunate, Pope Leo XIV serves as a true inspiration to people of all faiths. His message of hope, unity, compassion, and peace resonates in his home state of Illinois and across the globe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The office added: \u201cThe governor and first lady offered their well-wishes and deep gratitude to Pope Leo XIV for his public service and for his positive representation of Chicago, Illinois, and the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pritzker offered the pope several gifts including a framed piece of art made from an incarcerated woman at Logan Correctional Facility, the book \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Lincoln-Legacy-Defined-Nation-Objects\/dp\/0847874494\" target=\"null\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Lincoln: The Life and Legacy that Defined a Nation<\/a>\u201d by Ian Hunt, the book \u201cA House That Made History: The Illinois Governor\u2019s Mansion, Legacy of an Architectural Treasure\u201d written by First Lady MK Pritzker, and a pack of Burning Bush Breweries\u2019 \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/blockclubchicago.org\/2025\/05\/21\/burning-bush-brewery-releases-da-pope-beer-an-american-mild-ale-of-course\/\" target=\"null\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Da Pope<\/a>\u201d American mild ale.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Vatican did not release any details about what was discussed during the visit. The Democratic governor currently has before his desk the decision on whether to either sign into law or veto <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/267511\/illinois-senate-passes-assisted-suicide-measure\" target=\"null\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">assisted suicide legislation<\/a> that was recently approved the by the Illinois Legislature.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Illinois Catholic Conference is urging Gov. Pritzker to veto the bill.
