Nacido en Antioqu\u00eda, c. 347, San Juan Cris\u00f3stomo (Boca de Oro) fue quiz\u00e1s el mayor predicador en la historia de la Iglesia, de ah\u00ed el nombre que se le dio, y el padre griego m\u00e1s prominente de la Iglesia.<\/p>\n

Creci\u00f3 en Antioqu\u00eda, recibi\u00f3 una excelente educaci\u00f3n griega cl\u00e1sica y, tras conocer al santo obispo Melecio, decidi\u00f3 dedicar su tiempo al estudio de las obras religiosas y las Sagradas Escrituras. Recibi\u00f3 el bautismo despu\u00e9s de tres a\u00f1os de estudio y parti\u00f3 hacia el desierto para vivir la vida asc\u00e9tica de un ermita\u00f1o.<\/p>\n

Sus extremas mortificaciones dejaron su salud fr\u00e1gil, por lo que regres\u00f3 a Antioqu\u00eda tras dos a\u00f1os de recuperaci\u00f3n y se dedic\u00f3 a estudiar para el sacerdocio. Fue ordenado en 386 y sirvi\u00f3 en la Catedral de Antioqu\u00eda durante 12 a\u00f1os, ganando gran fama por su sublime predicaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

En 398 fue nombrado a la fuerza Patriarca de Constantinopla, y r\u00e1pidamente se volvi\u00f3 muy popular entre su reba\u00f1o gracias a su ejemplo de predicaci\u00f3n y valent\u00eda frente al poder imperial, cuya corrupci\u00f3n y decadencia nunca evit\u00f3 criticar en p\u00fablico.<\/p>\n

Esta actitud naturalmente lo convirti\u00f3 en enemigo de la emperatriz Eudoxia, as\u00ed como de Te\u00f3filo, obispo de Alejandr\u00eda, quien lo hizo condenar bajo falsas acusaciones en 403. Fue exiliado a Armenia, donde continu\u00f3 siendo una gran presencia en la Iglesia de Oriente a trav\u00e9s de sus numerosas cartas.
