Saint Bernward a servi comme treizi\u00e8me \u00e9v\u00eaque de Hildesheim, en Allemagne, au milieu du Xe si\u00e8cle. Son grand-p\u00e8re \u00e9tait Athelbero, comte palatin de Saxe. Apr\u00e8s avoir perdu ses parents, Bernward fut envoy\u00e9 vivre chez son oncle Volkmar, qui \u00e9tait \u00e9v\u00eaque d'Utrecht. Son oncle sollicita l'aide de Thangmar, le directeur pieux et instruit de l'\u00e9cole cath\u00e9drale de Heidelberg, pour aider \u00e0 l'\u00e9ducation de Bernward. <\/span><\/p>\n

Sous l'instruction de Thangmar, Bernward fit des progr\u00e8s rapides dans la pi\u00e9t\u00e9 chr\u00e9tienne ainsi que dans les sciences. Il devint tr\u00e8s comp\u00e9tent en math\u00e9matiques, en peinture, en architecture, et particuli\u00e8rement dans la fabrication de vases et d'ornements eccl\u00e9siastiques en argent et en or.<\/p>\n

Saint Bernward termina ses \u00e9tudes \u00e0 Mayence, o\u00f9 il fut ensuite ordonn\u00e9 pr\u00eatre. Au lieu d'\u00eatre plac\u00e9 dans le dioc\u00e8se de son oncle, l'\u00e9v\u00eaque Volkmar, il choisit de rester pr\u00e8s de son grand-p\u00e8re, Athelbero, pour le r\u00e9conforter dans sa vieillesse. \u00c0 la mort de son grand-p\u00e8re en 987, il devint aum\u00f4nier \u00e0 la cour imp\u00e9riale, et l'imp\u00e9ratrice r\u00e9gente Th\u00e9ophano le nomma rapidement pr\u00e9cepteur de son fils Otton III, qui n'avait que six ans \u00e0 l'\u00e9poque. Bernward resta \u00e0 la cour imp\u00e9riale jusqu'en 993, date \u00e0 laquelle il fut \u00e9lu \u00e9v\u00eaque de Hildesheim.<\/p>\n

Homme d'une pi\u00e9t\u00e9 extraordinaire, il \u00e9tait profond\u00e9ment d\u00e9vou\u00e9 \u00e0 la pri\u00e8re ainsi qu'\u00e0 la pratique de la mortification, et sa connaissance et sa pratique des arts \u00e9taient g\u00e9n\u00e9reusement employ\u00e9es au service de l'\u00c9glise.<\/p>\n

Peu avant sa mort en 1022, il fut rev\u00eatu de l'habit b\u00e9n\u00e9dictin. Il fut canonis\u00e9 par le pape C\u00e9lestin III en 1193.<\/span><\/p>\n
