{"id":65918,"date":"2025-10-08T14:14:45","date_gmt":"2025-10-08T14:14:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/christianpure.com\/?p=65918"},"modified":"2025-10-08T14:14:45","modified_gmt":"2025-10-08T14:14:45","slug":"czech-bishops-welcome-election-results-as-anti-church-coalition-fails-to-enter-parliament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/christianpure.com\/fr\/learn\/czech-bishops-welcome-election-results-as-anti-church-coalition-fails-to-enter-parliament\/","title":{"rendered":"Les \u00e9v\u00eaques tch\u00e8ques saluent les r\u00e9sultats des \u00e9lections alors qu'une coalition anti-\u00c9glise \u00e9choue \u00e0 entrer au Parlement"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 100%; margin-bottom: 25px;\">\n  <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/images\/bishop-pavel-konzbul-credit-diocese-of-brno.jpg?ssl=1\" style=\"display: block; margin: auto; max-width: 100%\" \/><br \/>\n  <span style=\"text-align: right; font-style: italic;\">Bishop Pavel Konzbul of Brno, Czech Republic. \/ Credit: Diocese of Brno<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<p>Rome, Italy, Oct 7, 2025 \/ 09:47 am (CNA).<\/p>\n<p>Czech Catholic bishops welcomed the results of the parliamentary elections on Oct. 3\u20134, which saw a populist party win the most votes but fall short of a majority, while a far-left coalition that bishops had warned had an explicitly anti-church platform failed to enter Parliament.<\/p>\n<p>The ANO 2011 party, led by billionaire former pime minister Andrej Babi\u0161, won 35% of the vote, while the Sta\u010dilo! coalition, led by communists and proposing restrictions on religious freedom, received only 4.3%, below the 5% threshold needed to enter the Chamber of Deputies.<\/p>\n<p>Archbishop Josef Nuz\u00edk of Olomouc, chairman of the Czech Bishops\u2019 Conference, issued a statement congratulating Babi\u0161 and pledging to \u201cpray for the newly elected legislators\u201d so that \u201cwe can live in peace, mutual respect, and together strive for the well-being of our home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish that our new parliamentary representatives would be able to build bridges, be sensitive to the weak and needy, honestly seek the truth, strive for understanding in society, and be ready to defend the rule of law and a just peace,\u201d Nuz\u00edk stated.<\/p>\n<p>The archbishop thanked citizens who participated in the elections and \u201cshowed interest in our common future.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Bishops assess outcome<\/h2>\n<p>Bishop Pavel Konzbul of the Diocese of Brno told CNA that \u201cthe Czechs have rejected extremist parties, although both the far left and the far right had a strong campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is good news,\u201d Konzbul said.<\/p>\n<p>The bishop noted that a \u201cslightly different course in foreign policy is to be expected, namely toward Ukraine and the EU.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said he is \u201ccurious to see how many of the numerous promises\u201d the new government likely to be formed by ANO 2011 \u201cwill be able to fulfill, as promises were made to all groups of the population during the campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Election results impact relationship with EU<\/h2>\n<p>The outgoing government coalition SPOLU, formed by the parties ODS, TOP09, and the Christian Democrats (KDU-\u010cSL), received 23% of the vote, finishing second. The STAN party (Mayors and Independents) received 11%.<\/p>\n<p>Other parties entering Parliament include the Czech Pirate Party, the SPD (Freedom and Direct Democracy), and the newcomer Motorist\u00e9 sob\u011b (Motorists for Themselves).<\/p>\n<p>Turnout was almost 70% of eligible voters in a country of nearly 11 million people.<\/p>\n<p>Stanislav Bal\u00edk, dean of the faculty of social studies at Masaryk University in Brno and an independent senator, told CNA the results suggest the new government will likely \u201cnot be inclined to wider cooperation with Western states\u201d and be \u201cmore friendly with Russia and less so toward Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, the Czech political system \u201chas checks and balances to prevent change from being rapid and absolute like the Senate, president, etc.,\u201d Bal\u00edk said.<\/p>\n<p>The Czech Parliament consists of two chambers, the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies. Citizens voted for the Chamber of Deputies, which determines the composition of the government. The prime minister is the head of government, who is formed by a majority of political parties that enter the Chamber of Deputies after elections every four years. The president has a more representative function.<\/p>\n<h2>Preelection concerns about religious freedom<\/h2>\n<p>In the weeks leading up to the election, the Czech Bishops\u2019 Conference issued a prayer novena and specifically warned about the threats to religious freedom posed by the Sta\u010dilo! coalition.<\/p>\n<p>Archbishop Jan Graubner of Prague stated before the vote that he would not support populists, financially irresponsible politicians, or those who do not support Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResponsible people do not go into debt, and if they do, not for unnecessary things,\u201d Graubner said.<\/p>\n<p>He said he could not vote for politicians who want to leave the European Union and NATO, which the Czech Republic is part of, or for those who \u201cspread hatred toward any group of people, (Ukrainians, Jews, people with a different orientation\u2026).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Graubner said he could not vote for the Sta\u010dilo! movement.<\/p>\n<p>Konzbul told CNA that the far-left coalition \u201chad an explicitly anti-church program.\u201d The bishops issued a formal statement warning that the Sta\u010dilo! coalition had proposals to limit financing of Christian and private schools and to invalidate marriages celebrated in churches.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was for the first time the \u010cBK clearly named the choice of a specific party, and those who would like to cooperate with it, as evil,\u201d Bal\u00edk said.<\/p>\n<h2>Analysts: No culture wars expected<\/h2>\n<p>Roman Joch, a political scientist who served as adviser to former prime minister Petr Ne\u010das, told CNA that regarding religious freedom, \u201cnothing bad happened, nothing got worse, it is very good as far as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAndrej Babi\u0161 is a pragmatist who does not want to wage cultural wars against Christian civilization,\u201d Joch said. He will not be pro-Russian as he is also a businessman with economic interests in the European Union, and not in Russia, Joch explained.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe progressive Czech Pirate Party will be in opposition and have no chance to damage anything,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Alexander Tomsk\u00fd, a Jewish commentator and promoter of Catholic writer G.K.
