Samedi, le pape L\u00e9on XIV a condamn\u00e9 l'usure, une pratique qui est parfois un p\u00e9ch\u00e9 extr\u00eamement grave t\u00e9moignant de la corruption du c\u0153ur de ceux qui ne voient les autres que comme des \u00ab objets d'exploitation \u00bb.<\/p>\n

L'usure peut \u00eatre d\u00e9finie comme le fait de facturer des int\u00e9r\u00eats excessifs sur un pr\u00eat, une pratique qui existe depuis l'Antiquit\u00e9. Traditionnellement, l'\u00c9glise catholique enseignait que le p\u00e9ch\u00e9 d'usure consistait \u00e0 exiger un avantage ou un profit dans le seul but de pr\u00eater. Cette compr\u00e9hension a \u00e9volu\u00e9 au fil du temps, et l'\u00c9glise ne condamne plus la pratique g\u00e9n\u00e9rale du pr\u00eat avec int\u00e9r\u00eats, tant que ceux-ci restent mod\u00e9r\u00e9s.<\/p>\n

Le 18 octobre, le Saint-P\u00e8re a re\u00e7u le Conseil national anti-usure d'Italie au Palais apostolique du Vatican. Depuis 30 ans, le conseil se consacre \u00e0 \u00ab combattre un probl\u00e8me qui a un impact d\u00e9vastateur sur la vie de tant de personnes et de familles \u00bb, selon le Bureau de presse du Vatican.<\/p>\n

Dans his address,<\/a> le pontife a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 que \u00ab le ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne de l'usure pointe vers la corruption du c\u0153ur humain. C'est une histoire douloureuse et ancienne, d\u00e9j\u00e0 attest\u00e9e dans la Bible. Les proph\u00e8tes, en effet, d\u00e9non\u00e7aient l'usure, ainsi que l'exploitation et toute forme d'injustice envers les pauvres \u00bb.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Combien Dieu est loin de l'attitude qui \u00e9crase les gens jusqu'\u00e0 les r\u00e9duire en esclavage ! C'est un p\u00e9ch\u00e9 grave, parfois tr\u00e8s grave, car il ne peut \u00eatre r\u00e9duit \u00e0 une simple question comptable ; l'usure peut plonger les familles dans la crise, elle peut user l'esprit et le c\u0153ur au point de conduire les gens \u00e0 penser au suicide comme seule issue \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le pape.<\/p>\n

Bien qu'il existe des formes d'usure qui semblent utiles \u00e0 ceux qui sont en difficult\u00e9 financi\u00e8re, elles finissent par se r\u00e9v\u00e9ler \u00ab pour ce qu'elles sont. Les cons\u00e9quences sont pay\u00e9es surtout par les personnes fragiles, comme celles qui sont victimes du jeu \u00bb ou celles confront\u00e9es \u00e0 \u00ab des moments difficiles, comme par exemple des traitements m\u00e9dicaux extraordinaires ou des d\u00e9penses impr\u00e9vues d\u00e9passant leurs moyens ou ceux de leur famille. Ce qui se pr\u00e9sente d'abord comme une main tendue devient, \u00e0 long terme, un tourment \u00bb.<\/p>\n

L\u00e9on XIV a poursuivi en disant que \u00ab les syst\u00e8mes financiers usuraires peuvent mettre des peuples entiers \u00e0 genoux. De m\u00eame, nous ne pouvons ignorer \u201cceux dont les agissements usuraires et avares conduisent \u00e0 la faim et \u00e0 la mort de leurs fr\u00e8res dans la famille humaine\u201d (Cat\u00e9chisme de l'\u00c9glise catholique, n\u00b0 2269<\/a>) : leurs responsabilit\u00e9s sont graves et ils alimentent des structures de p\u00e9ch\u00e9 iniques \u00bb.<\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s avoir appel\u00e9 au respect de la dignit\u00e9 de tous, en particulier des plus faibles et des plus vuln\u00e9rables, le Saint-P\u00e8re a exhort\u00e9 : \u00ab Soit nous retrouvons notre dignit\u00e9 morale et spirituelle, soit nous tombons dans un cloaque \u00bb.<\/p>\n

J\u00e9sus, Zach\u00e9e et un chemin vers la conversion des usuriers<\/h2>\n

Le pape L\u00e9on a ensuite fait r\u00e9f\u00e9rence au passage de l'\u00c9vangile (Luc 19, 1-10) dans lequel J\u00e9sus rencontre Zach\u00e9e, le chef des collecteurs d'imp\u00f4ts de J\u00e9richo, qui \u00ab \u00e9tait habitu\u00e9 aux abus, \u00e0 l'oppression et \u00e0 l'intimidation. Il \u00e9tait normal pour quelqu'un comme lui de profiter de sa position pour exploiter les gens et gagner de l'argent en volant les plus faibles \u00bb.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Et donc J\u00e9sus cherche Zach\u00e9e : Il l'appelle et lui dit qu'il veut s\u00e9journer chez lui. Et alors l'impensable se produit : la g\u00e9n\u00e9rosit\u00e9 de J\u00e9sus prend compl\u00e8tement l'homme au d\u00e9pourvu et le met au pied du mur. Revenant \u00e0 la raison, Zach\u00e9e r\u00e9alise qu'il a mal agi et d\u00e9cide de rembourser \u201cavec int\u00e9r\u00eats\u201d ! \u00bb a poursuivi L\u00e9on.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Personne ne lui en demandait tant, pas m\u00eame la loi mosa\u00efque. Mais le fait est que sa rencontre avec le Christ a transform\u00e9 son c\u0153ur, et alors tout a chang\u00e9. Seule la g\u00e9n\u00e9rosit\u00e9 est si efficace qu'elle nous r\u00e9v\u00e8le le sens de notre humanit\u00e9 \u00bb, a soulign\u00e9 le pape.<\/p>\n

Le pontife a soulign\u00e9 que \u00ab lorsque la recherche du profit pr\u00e9vaut, les autres ne sont plus des personnes, ils n'ont plus de visage, ils ne sont que des objets \u00e0 exploiter ; et ainsi nous finissons par nous perdre nous-m\u00eames et perdre nos \u00e2mes. La conversion de ceux qui pratiquent l'usure est tout aussi importante que la proximit\u00e9 avec ceux qui souffrent de l'usure \u00bb.<\/p>\n
