Saint Bartolo Longo \u2014 un ancien \u00ab pr\u00eatre \u00bb sataniste dont la conversion remarquable l'a conduit \u00e0 cr\u00e9er un sanctuaire d\u00e9di\u00e9 \u00e0 Notre-Dame du Rosaire et \u00e0 r\u00e9pandre la d\u00e9votion \u00e0 cette pri\u00e8re \u2014 a \u00e9t\u00e9 canonis\u00e9 par le pape L\u00e9on XIV le 19 octobre.<\/p>\n

En plus de son exemple de foi et de d\u00e9votion mariale, Bartolo Longo (Barth\u00e9lemy en fran\u00e7ais) peut \u00e9galement \u00eatre un mod\u00e8le pour ceux qui luttent avec leur sant\u00e9 mentale, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le p\u00e8re dominicain Joseph-Anthony Kress \u00e0 EWTN News.<\/p>\n

Le p\u00e8re Kress, promoteur du rosaire pour l'ordre dominicain, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 que Longo \u00ab a continu\u00e9 \u00e0 lutter avec sa sant\u00e9 mentale, et il a continu\u00e9 \u00e0 lutter avec des id\u00e9es suicidaires m\u00eame apr\u00e8s sa conversion \u00bb.<\/p>\n

N\u00e9 dans une famille catholique romaine d\u00e9vote, Longo s'est \u00e9loign\u00e9 de sa foi alors qu'il \u00e9tudiait le droit \u00e0 Naples dans les ann\u00e9es 1860 \u2014 une p\u00e9riode durant laquelle l'\u00c9glise catholique en Italie faisait face \u00e0 l'opposition d'un mouvement nationaliste luttant pour l'unification italienne. La plupart des principaux dirigeants du mouvement d'\u00ab Unification \u00bb \u00e9taient des francs-ma\u00e7ons qui entretenaient de fortes id\u00e9es anti-catholiques.<\/p>\n

L'\u00c9glise catholique luttait \u00e9galement contre la popularit\u00e9 croissante de l'occultisme, qui avait une forte pr\u00e9sence \u00e0 Naples \u00e0 l'\u00e9poque.<\/p>\n

Longo lui-m\u00eame s'est impliqu\u00e9 dans un culte sataniste et a fini par pr\u00e9tendre avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00ab ordonn\u00e9 \u00bb comme \u00ab pr\u00eatre \u00bb sataniste.<\/p>\n

Cependant, apr\u00e8s que Longo ait lutt\u00e9 pendant plusieurs ann\u00e9es contre l'anxi\u00e9t\u00e9 et la d\u00e9pression, y compris des pens\u00e9es suicidaires, un professeur d'universit\u00e9 de sa ville natale, Vincenzo Pepe, l'a exhort\u00e9 \u00e0 abandonner le satanisme et l'a pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 \u00e0 son futur confesseur, le p\u00e8re dominicain Alberto Radente.<\/p>\n

Sous la direction de Radente, de Pepe, de la religieuse (et d\u00e9sormais sainte) Caterina Volpicelli, et de la femme qui devint plus tard son \u00e9pouse, la comtesse Marianna Farnararo De Fusco, Longo est revenu \u00e0 sa foi catholique.<\/p>\n

Un moment d\u00e9terminant dans la r\u00e9version de Longo a eu lieu en octobre 1872, selon l'archev\u00eaque Tommaso Caputo de Pomp\u00e9i, en Italie.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Longo est arriv\u00e9 \u00e0 Pomp\u00e9i pour s'occuper des propri\u00e9t\u00e9s de la comtesse [De Fusco] et, en marchant dans ces rues \u2014 dangereuses \u00e0 cause de la pr\u00e9sence de bandits et de la malaria \u2014 il a ressenti une inspiration int\u00e9rieure : \u201cSi tu cherches le salut, propage le rosaire. C'est la promesse de Marie. Ceux qui propagent le rosaire sont sauv\u00e9s !\u201d Ce jour-l\u00e0, le jeune avocat s'est promis qu'il ne quitterait jamais cette vall\u00e9e [de Pomp\u00e9i] sans avoir d'abord propag\u00e9 la pri\u00e8re du rosaire \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Caputo au partenaire d'information en langue italienne de CNA, ACI Stampa.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Tout a commenc\u00e9 ce jour-l\u00e0 \u00bb, a poursuivi l'\u00e9v\u00eaque. \u00ab Longo a commenc\u00e9 par cat\u00e9chiser les paysans ; il a ensuite r\u00e9nov\u00e9 la petite \u00e9glise paroissiale du Saint-Sauveur et, sur les conseils de l'\u00e9v\u00eaque Giuseppe Formisano de Nola, en Italie, a d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de construire une nouvelle \u00e9glise d\u00e9di\u00e9e \u00e0 Notre-Dame du Rosaire \u2014 cette \u00e9glise est devenue le sanctuaire de Notre-Dame de Pomp\u00e9i. \u00bb<\/p>\n

Le p\u00e8re Kress a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 que, malgr\u00e9 son renoncement \u00e0 l'occultisme, Longo a continu\u00e9 \u00e0 lutter avec sa sant\u00e9 mentale : chaque fois qu'il \u00e9tait \u00ab au bord du d\u00e9sespoir, il se rappelait la promesse de notre Sainte M\u00e8re \u00e0 saint Dominique que quiconque promeut le rosaire sera sauv\u00e9. Et ce sont donc ces promesses qui lui ont donn\u00e9 assez d'espoir pour pers\u00e9v\u00e9rer \u00e0 travers ces moments sombres. \u00bb<\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s sa conversion, Longo \u00ab a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 retourner sur les lieux m\u00eames o\u00f9 il participait \u00e0 ces activit\u00e9s occultes \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Kress. \u00ab Et maintenant, \u00e9tant tr\u00e8s fermement enracin\u00e9 dans sa foi et sa d\u00e9votion \u00e0 la Sainte M\u00e8re, il se tenait debout lors de ces pratiques occultes, s\u00e9ances et autres, et avec un rosaire \u00e0 la main, il r\u00e9clamait ces moments pour la Sainte M\u00e8re et encourageait tous ceux qui y participaient \u00e0 rejeter leur pass\u00e9, \u00e0 rejeter leurs voies, et \u00e0 se tourner vers la Sainte M\u00e8re pour obtenir protection et bonheur. \u00bb<\/p>\n

Longo, devenu tertiaire dominicain en 1871, \u00ab est tr\u00e8s pertinent aujourd'hui, car apr\u00e8s sa conversion, il a v\u00e9cu sa vie profond\u00e9ment enracin\u00e9 dans l'\u00c9vangile \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Caputo.<\/p>\n

Trois ans apr\u00e8s avoir re\u00e7u l'inspiration divine de r\u00e9pandre la d\u00e9votion au rosaire, Longo a re\u00e7u l'image de Notre-Dame du Rosaire qui est devenue la pi\u00e8ce ma\u00eetresse du sanctuaire catholique de Pomp\u00e9i.<\/p>\n

L'image \u00ab \u00e9tait une toile us\u00e9e et ab\u00eem\u00e9e. Elle est arriv\u00e9e \u00e0 Pomp\u00e9i sur une humble charrette \u00e0 fumier, mais selon l'homme que nous reconnaissons maintenant comme un \u201cap\u00f4tre du rosaire\u201d, qui fut imm\u00e9diatement d\u00e9courag\u00e9 par l'\u00e9tat de l'ic\u00f4ne, elle devenait plus belle chaque jour \u00bb, a racont\u00e9 Caputo.<\/p>\n

L'\u00e9v\u00eaque de Pomp\u00e9i a rappel\u00e9 les nombreuses \u0153uvres \u00e9vang\u00e9liques et caritatives accomplies dans la ville par Longo et son \u00e9pouse, notamment la fondation d'un orphelinat pour filles et d'institutions pour les enfants de prisonniers.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Autour du sanctuaire, dont la premi\u00e8re pierre a \u00e9t\u00e9 pos\u00e9e le 8 mai 1876 et qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 consacr\u00e9 en 1891, des routes, des places, des services, une ligne de tramway, la gare ferroviaire, le bureau de poste et des maisons d'ouvriers ont vu le jour. Longo a beaucoup fait, mais il s'est toujours consid\u00e9r\u00e9, \u00e9vang\u00e9liquement, comme un \u201cserviteur inutile\u201d. Pour lui, tout \u00e9tait l'\u0153uvre de Notre-Dame du Rosaire et de sa puissante intercession \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Caputo.<\/p>\n

\u00ab \u00c0 la racine de chaque r\u00e9alisation, au fondement du travail \u00e0 Pomp\u00e9i, il y avait toujours le saint rosaire, une merveilleuse synth\u00e8se de l'\u00c9vangile, une contemplation du visage du Christ Sauveur \u00e0 travers les yeux de la M\u00e8re c\u00e9leste \u00bb, a-t-il ajout\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Longo est d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 \u00e0 Pomp\u00e9i en 1926. Ses derniers mots furent : \u00ab Mon seul d\u00e9sir est de voir Marie qui m'a sauv\u00e9 et qui me sauvera des griffes de Satan. \u00bb<\/p>\n

\u00ab Aujourd'hui encore, \u00e0 Pomp\u00e9i, tout nous rappelle son nom et ses enseignements \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Caputo.<\/p>\n
