Des d\u00e9fenseurs des droits de l'homme ont d\u00e9clar\u00e9 aux membres du Congr\u00e8s que la r\u00e9pression du gouvernement arm\u00e9nien contre les chr\u00e9tiens comprenait des d\u00e9tentions ill\u00e9gales de membres du clerg\u00e9, \u00e0 l'approche des \u00e9lections l\u00e9gislatives du pays en juin 2026.<\/p>\n

Les tensions se sont intensifi\u00e9es entre Nikol Pashinyan, l'actuel Premier ministre d'Arm\u00e9nie, et le chef de l'\u00c9glise apostolique arm\u00e9nienne, le Catholicos Kar\u00e9kine II, refl\u00e9tant la lutte autour de l'identit\u00e9 nationale et de l'orientation future de l'Arm\u00e9nie. Le ciblage des chr\u00e9tiens par le gouvernement a suscit\u00e9 des inqui\u00e9tudes quant \u00e0 la perte du patrimoine du pays en tant que plus ancienne nation chr\u00e9tienne au monde.<\/p>\n

Peter Flew, avocat et \u00e9crivain, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 lors d'une r\u00e9union au Congr\u00e8s le 20 novembre qu'il avait recueilli des preuves et des t\u00e9moignages concernant la pers\u00e9cution par le gouvernement de l'\u00c9glise apostolique arm\u00e9nienne. Flew a cit\u00e9 les remarques de Pashinyan lors d'une r\u00e9cente conf\u00e9rence de presse dans laquelle il affirmait que l'\u00c9glise apostolique arm\u00e9nienne \u00ab n'a pas de Catholicos \u00bb, patriarche supr\u00eame et chef de l'\u00c9glise, qualifiant Kar\u00e9kine II d'ill\u00e9gitime. <\/p>\n

\u00ab Les attaques sur ce front doivent cesser \u00bb, a-t-il d\u00e9clar\u00e9, appelant \u00e0 la lib\u00e9ration des prisonniers politiques. <\/p>\n

\u00ab J'ai l'espoir que si nous donnons plus d'importance \u00e0 cette question \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Flew \u00e0 CNA, \u00ab il y aura un engagement pour dire que nous soutenons l'Arm\u00e9nie, nous soutenons l'avenir de l'Arm\u00e9nie et sa paix. \u00bb <\/p>\n

Flew a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 : \u00ab La situation sur le terrain est telle que quiconque s'y oppose finit en prison. Les \u00e9glises ne sont pas repr\u00e9sent\u00e9es ici [lors de l'\u00e9v\u00e9nement] parce qu'elles ont eu peur, et c'est l\u00e0 tout le d\u00e9fi. \u00bb <\/p>\n

\u00ab Je pense qu'avec les communaut\u00e9s internationales, la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 civile, l'international chez soi, si nous pouvons nous rassembler et permettre aux gens de sentir qu'il y a une masse critique qui fait entendre sa voix, cela pourrait changer les choses \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Flew. \u00ab Mais pour le moment, vous ne verrez pas l'\u00c9glise faire grand-chose car elle est assi\u00e9g\u00e9e. \u00bb <\/p>\n

Joel Veldkamp, s'exprimant au nom de la mission de Christian Solidarity International qui milite pour la libert\u00e9 religieuse et la dignit\u00e9 humaine, a fait \u00e9cho \u00e0 des pr\u00e9occupations similaires pour les membres de l'\u00c9glise en Arm\u00e9nie.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Telle que je vois les choses, le fait que des \u00e9lections l\u00e9gislatives approchent signifie que la r\u00e9pression va s'intensifier \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Veldkamp. \u00ab L'assaut contre l'\u00c9glise doit \u00eatre consid\u00e9r\u00e9 comme faisant partie de cet effort visant \u00e0 couper les voix dissidentes avant les \u00e9lections. \u00bb<\/p>\n

Veldkamp a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 que le d\u00e9partement d'\u00c9tat am\u00e9ricain \u00e9tait rest\u00e9 largement silencieux sur la r\u00e9pression de Pashinyan contre l'\u00c9glise apostolique arm\u00e9nienne, \u00e0 l'exception d'Asif Mahmood, vice-pr\u00e9sident de la Commission am\u00e9ricaine sur la libert\u00e9 religieuse internationale. <\/p>\n

\u00ab Le Premier ministre Pashinyan envisage une future Arm\u00e9nie o\u00f9 l'\u00c9glise n'aurait aucune influence sociale ou politique ind\u00e9pendante de l'\u00c9tat \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Veldkamp. \u00ab Une Arm\u00e9nie avec une identit\u00e9 internationale gravement affaiblie n'est pas une Arm\u00e9nie qui sera utile aux \u00c9tats-Unis tr\u00e8s longtemps. Si le pr\u00e9sident veut \u00e9viter ce r\u00e9sultat, il est temps pour le gouvernement am\u00e9ricain de briser le silence. \u00bb <\/p>\n
