L'archidioc\u00e8se de New York versera pr\u00e8s d'un tiers de milliard de dollars aux victimes d'abus sexuels commis par le clerg\u00e9, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 cette semaine le cardinal Timothy Dolan, proposant l'un des plus importants versements de l'\u00c9glise dans l'histoire des \u00c9tats-Unis afin de compenser \u00ab l'horreur des abus \u00bb commis par le clerg\u00e9 sur place.  <\/p>\n

Le cardinal Dolan a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 que l'archidioc\u00e8se versera \u00ab un total de plus de $300 millions \u00bb aux survivants d'abus dans le cadre d'un \u00ab r\u00e8glement global \u00bb avec les victimes. <\/p>\n

L'archidioc\u00e8se a pris \u00ab une s\u00e9rie de d\u00e9cisions financi\u00e8res tr\u00e8s difficiles \u00bb pour aider \u00e0 financer le r\u00e8glement, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 le cardinal Dolan dans la d\u00e9claration du 8 d\u00e9cembre<\/a>, incluant des licenciements de personnel et une r\u00e9duction de 10% du budget de fonctionnement de l'archidioc\u00e8se. <\/p>\n

Ce r\u00e8glement intervient dix ans apr\u00e8s la cr\u00e9ation du Programme ind\u00e9pendant de r\u00e9conciliation et d'indemnisation de l'archidioc\u00e8se, qui cherche \u00e0 \u00ab promouvoir la gu\u00e9rison et apporter une conclusion \u00bb en offrant une compensation aux victimes d'abus du clerg\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Le cardinal Dolan a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 que le r\u00e8glement faisait suite \u00e0 des entretiens avec un m\u00e9diateur tiers qui a aid\u00e9 \u00e0 n\u00e9gocier un \u00ab r\u00e8glement global \u00bb, un processus qui permet une r\u00e9solution rapide des dossiers tout en \u00e9vitant de longues proc\u00e9dures judiciaires. <\/p>\n

L'archidioc\u00e8se et les avocats travaillent avec le juge californien \u00e0 la retraite Daniel Buckley pour aider \u00e0 m\u00e9diatiser le processus. L'ann\u00e9e derni\u00e8re, Buckley a aid\u00e9 \u00e0 m\u00e9diatiser le propre r\u00e8glement des abus de l'archidioc\u00e8se de Los Angeles,<\/a> qui a abouti \u00e0 un accord record de $880 millions pour les survivants d'abus. <\/p>\n

Le cardinal Dolan a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 que l'archidioc\u00e8se cherche \u00e0 assurer \u00ab la plus grande compensation possible aux victimes-survivantes \u00bb tout en poursuivant \u00ab des minist\u00e8res vitaux pour le bien de nos paroisses, de nos familles et de nos communaut\u00e9s \u00bb.<\/p>\n

Le cardinal a \u00e9galement d\u00e9clar\u00e9 que l'archidioc\u00e8se est toujours engag\u00e9 dans un conflit juridique avec son assureur de longue date, Chubb. En 2024, l'archidioc\u00e8se a lanc\u00e9 une poursuite contre Chubb,<\/a> affirmant que la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 \u00ab tentait d'\u00e9luder son obligation contractuelle l\u00e9gale et morale \u00bb de verser des indemnit\u00e9s financi\u00e8res aux victimes d'abus sexuels.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Malgr\u00e9 l'acceptation de millions de dollars de primes de la part de l'archidioc\u00e8se, Chubb a refus\u00e9 avec constance d'honorer les polices qu'elle a \u00e9mises \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Dolan le 8 d\u00e9cembre. <\/p>\n

Le cardinal Dolan a exhort\u00e9 les fid\u00e8les \u00e0 prier \u00ab pour les victimes-survivantes, leurs familles et tous ceux qui ont v\u00e9cu l'horreur des abus \u00bb.<\/p>\n

Le versement de New York intervient au moment m\u00eame o\u00f9 un juge f\u00e9d\u00e9ral de Louisiane a approuv\u00e9 un r\u00e8glement de $230 millions qui sera vers\u00e9 aux victimes d'abus par l'archidioc\u00e8se de La Nouvelle-Orl\u00e9ans. L'archidioc\u00e8se avait accept\u00e9 le versement en octobre.<\/a><\/p>\n

Le versement de pr\u00e8s d'un $milliard de dollars de l'archidioc\u00e8se de Los Angeles reste le record am\u00e9ricain pour un r\u00e8glement d'abus par un archidioc\u00e8se ou un dioc\u00e8se. Le record officiel pour un r\u00e8glement dioc\u00e9sain est de $323 millions<\/a>, par le dioc\u00e8se de Rockville Centre \u00e0 New York, bien qu'il ne soit pas clair si le paiement de l'archidioc\u00e8se de New York d\u00e9passera finalement ce montant. <\/p>\n

Plus t\u00f4t cette ann\u00e9e, le dioc\u00e8se de Rochester, dans l'\u00c9tat de New York, a accept\u00e9 un r\u00e8glement de pr\u00e8s de $250 millions<\/a> pour les victimes d'abus. Le dioc\u00e8se de Syracuse a \u00e9galement accept\u00e9 cette ann\u00e9e un r\u00e8glement de $176 millions.<\/a><\/p>\n
