Environ 7 000 personnes se sont rassembl\u00e9es sur un site en plein air pour marquer cette \u00e9tape importante vers la saintet\u00e9 d'un chef religieux et historien pionnier : le patriarche Estephan Douaihy.<\/p>\n

Une c\u00e9l\u00e9bration ancr\u00e9e dans l'histoire<\/h2>\n

Bkerk\u00e9, si\u00e8ge \u00e9piscopal du patriarcat catholique maronite d'Antioche, \u00e9tait orn\u00e9 d'ornements symboliques pour le jour de la c\u00e9l\u00e9bration.<\/p>\n

Le patriarche maronite Bechara Boutros al-Rai a pr\u00e9sid\u00e9 la messe avec le repr\u00e9sentant papal, le cardinal Marcello Semeraro, pr\u00e9fet du Dicast\u00e8re pour les causes des saints. <\/p>\n

Simultan\u00e9ment au Vatican, une autre c\u00e9r\u00e9monie a \u00e9t\u00e9 organis\u00e9e pour c\u00e9l\u00e9brer le nouveau patriarche b\u00e9atifi\u00e9, l'\u00c9glise catholique orientale \u00e9tant en pleine communion avec Rome.<\/p>\n

Dans son hom\u00e9lie, Semeraro a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 : \u00ab Nous r\u00e9citons souvent dans nos pri\u00e8res le psaume : \u201cLe juste fleurit comme le palmier, il grandit comme le c\u00e8dre du Liban.\u201d \u00bb Il a expliqu\u00e9 qu'un palmier est une source de vie vitale dans le d\u00e9sert. De m\u00eame, le c\u00e8dre du Liban se dresse comme un symbole in\u00e9branlable de force et d'endurance dans la maison de Dieu, l'\u00c9glise. Le cardinal a compar\u00e9 Douaihy \u00e0 un c\u00e8dre, d\u00e9vou\u00e9 au service de son peuple. <\/p>\n

\u00ab Douaihy a \u00e9t\u00e9 le patriarche de l'\u00c9glise maronite pendant plus de 30 ans, au cours d'une p\u00e9riode de pers\u00e9cution ext\u00e9rieure et de schisme interne \u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Semeraro, expliquant que le futur saint a accept\u00e9 ces \u00e9preuves, partag\u00e9 les souffrances de J\u00e9sus et pardonn\u00e9 aux autres.<\/p>\n

\u00c0 la fin de la messe et de la procession, le patriarche al-Rai a re\u00e7u la premi\u00e8re image du bienheureux Douaihy, peinte par des religieuses carm\u00e9lites.<\/p>\n

De l'adversit\u00e9 au leadership spirituel<\/h2>\n

Douaihy est n\u00e9 en 1630 dans le village de Zgharta, au nord, qui fait aujourd'hui partie du Liban mais qui \u00e9tait alors sous domination ottomane. Son p\u00e8re est mort alors qu'il avait 3 ans. Il a obtenu une bourse pour Rome \u00e0 l'\u00e2ge de 11 ans, mais son avenir prometteur a sembl\u00e9 sombre lorsqu'il a perdu la vue \u00e0 14 ans, face \u00e0 la perspective d'\u00eatre renvoy\u00e9 au Liban.<\/p>\n

Dans un moment de d\u00e9tresse, le jeune Douaihy s'est tourn\u00e9 vers la Vierge Marie. Apr\u00e8s avoir pass\u00e9 toute la nuit en pri\u00e8re ardente devant une ic\u00f4ne de Notre-Dame, sa vue aurait \u00e9t\u00e9 restaur\u00e9e \u2014 miraculeusement, selon la croyance. <\/p>\n

Cette exp\u00e9rience personnelle profonde a fa\u00e7onn\u00e9 le parcours spirituel de Douaihy et son avenir en tant que chef religieux. Elle lui a \u00e9galement inculqu\u00e9 un sens du but et du d\u00e9vouement envers sa patrie. \u00c0 l'\u00e2ge de 20 ans \u2014 bien qu'on lui ait offert un poste prestigieux de directeur de s\u00e9minaire \u2014 il a choisi de retourner au Liban. Ce choix \u00e9tait enracin\u00e9 dans une promesse qu'il avait faite \u00e0 la Vierge Marie : rentrer chez lui et partager ses connaissances avec ses compatriotes libanais.<\/p>\n

Douaihy est d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 en 1704 \u00e0 l'\u00e2ge de 73 ans dans la vall\u00e9e de Kadisha, au Liban.<\/p>\n

Un message pour le Liban moderne<\/h2>\n

Pour de nombreux maronites libanais, la b\u00e9atification de Douaihy d\u00e9passe sa simple signification religieuse.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Douaihy aimait son pays, contrairement \u00e0 beaucoup d'entre nous qui partent apr\u00e8s chaque obstacle \u00bb, a not\u00e9 Daccache, en \u00e9voquant l'exode actuel du Liban.<\/p>\n
