What you are looking at
Fifty moments of Holy Week, from the anointing at Bethany to the evening of the first Easter Sunday. For each moment you see what Matthew, Mark, Luke and John say, side by side and always in that order. In the list of the week, a filled square means that Gospel tells the moment.
Where the Gospels differ on a detail, their words are marked. Below the texts, each difference is set out with the main ways Christians have explained it, and where each explanation comes from.
Where the words come from
Every word of Scripture here is from the Berean Standard Bible, which its translators have placed in the public domain (bereanbible.com). The time words under each day, such as “six days before the Passover”, are the Gospels’ own. The Berean Standard Bible prints the sign on the cross in capital letters; here it is set in italics.
What we decided
We decided which passages tell the same moment, the order of the moments, and the day each falls on. The Gospels name few weekdays. The days here are the ones most harmonies of the Gospels give, and Christians have long disagreed about some of them, above all the day of the Last Supper. The short summaries of each explanation are ours, and each names its source.
Mark’s ending
The two oldest complete manuscripts of Mark end at 16:8, with the women running from the tomb. Most later manuscripts go on to 16:20. Passages from those verses carry a note where they appear.
