Nato 61 anni fa in una famiglia musulmana in Turchia, Belkä±z è stata la prima figlia dopo due figli. Da bambina, è andata alla moschea e ha letto il Corano in arabo, ma dice di non averlo capito. Dopo aver letto libri sulla filosofia materialista in gioventù, è diventata atea all'età di 15 anni.
Belkız (il cui cognome viene trattenuto per motivi di privacy) ha dichiarato ad ACI Mena, news partner in lingua araba della CNA, che dopo la laurea, è diventata insegnante di letteratura e leggeva costantemente libri. Quando aveva 28 anni, ha letto il libro di Turan Dursun "This Is Religion." (Dursun, un ex musulmano sciita e studioso diventato ateo, è stato assassinato a causa di ciò che ha scritto sull'Islam e sulla religione. Il suo libro critica i libri religiosi (principalmente il Corano).
Belkız non riusciva a credere a ciò che leggeva, così comprò un Corano turco e lo lesse. La Bibbia è stata la prossima: ne ha acquistata una alla Fiera del libro di Izmir ed è stata invitata a guardare un film in una chiesa protestante sulla vita di Gesù basato sul Vangelo di Luca.
Guardare il film ha cambiato completamente il modo in cui pensava a Dio. La storia biblica che la toccò di più fu la preghiera dell'esattore delle tasse e del fariseo nel Tempio. Qui vide il proprio peccato. Poiché, come il fariseo, era così fiduciosa nella propria giustizia, sperimentò la sua prima vergogna davanti a Dio. “Love your enemies” became her guide. In seguito, andava alla chiesa protestante ogni domenica, leggeva regolarmente la Bibbia e partecipava sempre alle riunioni di preghiera. Fu battezzata e visse felicemente in un rapporto vivo con Dio.
Then one Sunday at a church service in 2005, a young person taking bread and wine at the Lord’s table took the bread, put the crust in his mouth and squeezed the inside of the bread in the palm of his hand. When Belkız saw this she felt uncomfortable because she felt as if the body of the Lord had been hurt. She talked to a Protestant friend about it. She said he told her it was okay because “it’s not really the Lord’s body, we do it in remembrance; Catholics really believe that it is the body of Christ.”

“I did not choose God, he chose me,” Belkız said. “What impresses me most about Christianity is the Lord Jesus’ infinite love for us. I have found my best friend and my most beautiful lover.”
When asked if she was afraid of persecution as a Christian, she smiled: “When Jesus was betrayed, his disciple Peter denied Jesus three times. Because he was afraid. But the same Peter, after receiving the Holy Spirit, spread the Gospel from Jerusalem to Italy and when he was going to be crucified, he said, ‘I am not worthy to die, Lord,’ and was crucified [upside down].”
Belkız also said what she has gained in her faith journey is right in the Bible: “Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Gal 5:22-23).
“God offers us all a treasure. All we have to do is accept it,” Belkız said. “And God proves his love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom 5:8).
