June 24, 2025. \/ Credit: Courtney Mares\/CNA<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<p>Vatican City, Jun 24, 2025 \/ 13:47 pm (CNA).<\/p>\n<p>More than 2,500 seminarians from 57 countries converged on Rome this week to pray at the tomb of St. Peter, receive a blessing from Pope Leo XIV, and celebrate their vocations in the Jubilee of Seminarians.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you for courageously accepting the Lord\u2019s invitation to follow him, to be disciples, to enter the seminary. You have to be courageous and not be afraid,\u201d Pope Leo XIV told the young men gathered in St. Peter\u2019s Basilica on June 24.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs Christ loved with the heart of man, you are called to love with the heart of Christ!\u201d the pope said in his catechesis to the seminarians, urging them to \u201clove with the heart of Jesus.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Over two days, the jubilee pilgrims prayed the rosary together at the tomb of St. Paul, passed through the Holy Doors of the basilicas in Rome, and knelt before the Eucharist in adoration. Among them were seminarians from Albania to Argentina, India to Italy, and the United States to Ukraine \u2014 each carrying his own story of how God called him to the priesthood.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here are nine seminarians who shared how they heard the call to the priesthood:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Thomas Hammen, 28, Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee, Florida&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI think a key message is that we\u2019re made to give ourselves away in love, while the culture says to only live for yourself\u2026 In my college years specifically, I experienced having everything the world told me that would make me happy and like Pope Leo has been saying over and over again, quoting St. Augustine, \u2018my heart was restless.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThankfully at Florida State University, I had an awesome friend who invited me on a retreat, and it was on that retreat where there was Eucharistic adoration that I heard the truth that my heart is made for God and when I live for him I come fully alive and I\u2019m able to step into the mission that he has for me.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d say my vocation is a result of God showing me mercy \u2026 and from knowing that I\u2019m loved, that comes a great conviction that I\u2019m chosen for something great and that\u2019s really the source of my entire vocation to be a priest.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hammen<strong> <\/strong>hopes to be ordained in 2030.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Joseph Mlawa, Archdiocese of Agrigento, Italy&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"mx-auto\" style=\"width:100%\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/admin.catholicnewsagency.com\/images\/mlawaseminar.jpeg?quality=80&#038;ssl=1\" class=\"img-fluid\" style=\"null\" alt=\"Joseph Mlawa from Agrigento, Sicily, walks with fellow seminarians in Rome on Tuesday, June 24, 2025. However, it was a bit difficult because my parents died in 2006. But in 2015, there were missionaries who came to my parish and they helped me to come here to Italy to fulfill the calling of my vocation \u2026 They helped to pay my tuition for the nine years.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Thomas Stanczak, 35, Archdiocese of Milwaukee<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"mx-auto\" style=\"width:100%\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/admin.catholicnewsagency.com\/images\/screenshot-2025-06-24-at-5.42.04-pm.png?quality=69&#038;ssl=1\" class=\"img-fluid\" style=\"null\" alt=\"Thomas Stanczak stands near St. Peter&#039;s Basilica in Rome on Tuesday, June 24, 2025. Credit: Gianluca Gangemi\/EWTN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A recent convert from Protestantism, Stanczak said he \u201cread\u201d his way into the Church.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think, as St. John Henry Newman says, \u2018to be deep in history is to cease to be Protestant,\u2019\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really felt a very strong call from the Lord during Mass \u2026 and when the Lord says for you to do something, it\u2019s hard to say no.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In Rome, he has had a \u201cwonderful experience\u201d going to the churches from \u201cthe different ancient martyrs and saints that we pray in the Roman canon, seeing Cosmos and Damien\u2019s church, John and Paul, Agnes and Lucy.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll these different wonderful saints have really helped me connect in a special way to the universal Church.\u201d\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He hopes to be ordained in 2030.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Pietro, 24, Diocese of Locri-Gerace, Calabria, Italy&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"mx-auto\" style=\"width:100%\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/admin.catholicnewsagency.com\/images\/pietroseminarian.jpeg?quality=80&#038;ssl=1\" class=\"img-fluid\" style=\"null\" alt=\"Seminarian Pietro (left) stands with priests and seminarians from Calabria in Rome on Tuesday, June 24, 2025. Finally, he somehow \u2018pulled me by the ears,\u2019 as we say\u2026 Slowly, with his strength, [the Lord] showed me day by day what is the meaning of my vocation, not only my vocation to the priesthood, but also to follow him with all my heart, as far as he will lead me, even to the point of giving my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are so many challenges, as there always have been, and so I think if the Church continues to trust and rely on the Holy Spirit, then she will overcome them all.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Carlos B\u00e1rcenas, 26, Archdiocese of Panama<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"mx-auto\" style=\"width:100%\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/admin.catholicnewsagency.com\/images\/panamasems.jpeg?quality=80&#038;ssl=1\" class=\"img-fluid\" style=\"null\" alt=\"Seminarians from Panama pose with their national flag in Rome on Tuesday, June 24, 2025. Credit: Victoria Cardiel\/EWTN News<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe restlessness was already within me from my mother\u2019s womb,\u201d B\u00e1rcenas joked.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While studying mechanical engineering, he \u201crealized that [God] was asking me for something more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to be above all credible, acceptable, and consistent with Christian life,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Pepe Zinkewich, 26, Archdiocese of Los Angeles&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"mx-auto\" style=\"width:100%\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/admin.catholicnewsagency.com\/images\/zinkewich.jpeg?quality=80&#038;ssl=1\" class=\"img-fluid\" style=\"null\" alt=\"Pepe Zinkewich poses in Rome near Vatican City, Tuesday, June 24, 2025. I grew up in a very heavily Catholic family \u2026 but I didn\u2019t really feel called to the priesthood until I went away for college. It was there that I got in contact with a very holy priest who loved the Eucharist and would die for it. And that really inspired me to follow Christ and devote myself to his Church.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough prayer and spiritual direction, I found my vocation to the diocesan seminary, and I\u2019ve loved every minute of it. Ever since I entered, I thought the priesthood was going to be quiet and simple, but it has turned out to be the adventure of a lifetime!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zinkewich hopes to be ordained in 2029.<\/p>\n<h2>Jos\u00e9 Ylef Felicidad, 22, Diocese of Arecibo, Puerto Rico&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI felt the call when I was 20 years old. It was through a priest friend of mine. Literally, the Lord was transfigured in him and he told me a phrase that moved me: \u2018He needs you.\u2019 His face changed to that of Jesus, but without ceasing to be him. It was extraordinary.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Felicidad\u2019s greatest aspiration is to leave behind \u201ceverything for the Lord and for the holy people of God.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Randy Marfo, 25, from Ghana&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"mx-auto\" style=\"width:100%\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/admin.catholicnewsagency.com\/images\/marfoseminarian.jpeg?quality=80&#038;ssl=1\" class=\"img-fluid\" style=\"null\" alt=\"Seminarian Randy Marfo smiles while visiting St. Peter&#039;s Basilica in Vatican City, Tuesday, June 24, 2025. This experience motivated him to follow a vocation to the priesthood.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe biggest problem that my country is facing is that the population of Catholics is decreasing in these days because some of the priests are not doing what is expected of them, so Church members are leaving to other denominations, like Pentecostals or the Baptists.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He hopes to be ordained in 2030.<\/p>\n<h2>William Iv\u00e1n S\u00e1nchez Vel\u00e1zquez, Diocese of Mayag\u00fcez, Puerto Rico&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI have been in the seminary for seven years now,\u201d he said. \u201cI met with the bishop and, as soon as I finished school, I went straight to the seminary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His hope is to become a priest who resembles \u201cthe Good Shepherd\u201d and to be \u201cdedicated to serving my sheep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Lord himself said: \u2018Pray to the Lord of the harvest.\u2019 The Lord provides. I firmly believe that the Lord answers the people who kneel to pray. We should not stop praying for vocations. That\u2019s the only thing to do: pray, pray, pray.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>The Rome Experience&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<p>The American seminarians taking part in the jubilee are in Italy this summer for the \u201cRome Experience,\u201d a six-week program to study, pray, and walk in the footsteps of the saints. Credit: Courtney Mares\/CNA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWhile I\u2019ve been here, it\u2019s been so amazing to encounter the saints \u2014 to visit where they are buried, to hear their stories,\u201d Hammen said. \u201cMy hope is to return to the United States and share what I\u2019ve experienced here.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Jubilee of Seminarians is just one of many spiritual celebrations taking place in Rome during the holy year.
