It comes from a deep place in your heart, a desire to know your Creator in a more personal way. And let me tell you, that’s not a sign of weak faith; no, that’s your spirit reaching out for a closer walk with the Divine!

Get ready, because we’re about to go on an encouraging, faith-building journey to see how God shows Himself to us. We’re not trying to pin down a physical picture we are going to discover the incredible ways God reveals His awesome glory, His unconditional love, and His ever-present help. Understanding God better is a fantastic adventure, one that’s overflowing with hope and wonder!

If God is Spirit, What Does That Mean for His Appearance?

The Bible gives us a powerful key right in John 4:24: “God is spirit”.¹ what does that mean for what He looks like? It’s something wonderful! It means God isn’t limited like we are. He doesn’t have a physical body; He’s not made of flesh and bones.³ Think about it – He created the whole universe, so His very nature goes way beyond all the physical stuff He made.²

Being Spirit means God is unlimited! He’s invisible to our natural eyes, that’s true.³ You can’t measure Him or put Him in a box.³ But that doesn’t mean He’s far away. No, sir! Because God is Spirit, He can be everywhere at once – that’s His omnipresence!3 Isn’t that amazing? He can be right there with you, with every single person, no matter what you’re going through, right this very moment.

Sometimes the Bible talks about God having “eyes” or “hands”.³ That’s just God’s beautiful way of helping us understand. He uses words we can relate to, to show us His incredible power, His loving care, and how He’s always involved in our lives. It doesn’t mean He has literal body parts it shows us He sees you, He hears you, and He’s actively working good things in your life and in the world!3

When you understand God is Spirit, it changes everything! You stop looking for a physical image and start connecting with Him through your faith, through your prayers, and by experiencing His goodness. It opens up a richer, deeper way to know Him. Because God is Spirit, He doesn’t have a physical look like we do, and that’s why He uses beautiful, symbolic ways to show us He’s interacting with us.

What Does the Bible Say God looks Like in Visions?

You might be thinking about those powerful visions in the Bible, where it seems like people actually saw God. And you’re right, those accounts from prophets like Ezekiel and John are absolutely extraordinary! Ezekiel saw a throne that looked like it was made of beautiful sapphire, and on it was a figure that resembled a man, surrounded by what looked like glowing metal and fire, with a brilliant light all around, like a rainbow.¹ Wow!

And John, in Revelation, saw Jesus in His glorified state – hair as white as snow, eyes like blazing fire, feet like glowing bronze, a voice like a mighty waterfall, and a face shining brighter than the sun!1 But here’s something really important, friend: notice the words they used. They kept saying things like “looked like,” “appeared to be,” and “like the appearance of”.¹

Can you imagine? They were trying to describe something so glorious, so beyond our everyday words, that they were struggling to find the language! It’s like trying to describe the most beautiful sunset you’ve ever seen to someone who’s never seen color – words just can’t do it justice. These visions weren’t meant to be like photographs of God. No, they were God’s way of revealing His awesome majesty, using symbols the prophets could try to grasp. The whole point wasn’t to give us a police sketch of God. It was to fill us with a deep understanding of His incredible power, His perfect purity, His unapproachable holiness, and His mind-blowing glory!1

These stories are there to fill you with wonder, to remind you just how mighty and majestic our God is! The consistent use of these “like” and “as if” phrases shows they were trying their best to explain something beyond words. That intense imagery of fire and brilliant light? That’s to show us God’s “otherness,” His amazing power, so we don’t make the mistake of thinking of Him in too small or ordinary a way.

Let’s look at this amazing table, it helps us see even more clearly how God revealed His glory in these incredible visions:

Glimpses of God’s Awe-Inspiring Glory in Biblical Visions

Biblical Figure & Scripture Reference

Key Symbolic Imagery Described

What This Symbolic Language Suggests About God’s Nature

Ezekiel (Ezekiel 1:26-28)

Throne of sapphire, figure like a man, glowing metal, fire, brilliant light, rainbow.1

His incredible majesty and kingly power, His perfect purity and holiness that shine so bright, His awesome power to judge righteously, and His radiant, beautiful glory.

John the Revelator (Revelation 1:14-16)

Hair white like wool/snow, eyes like blazing fire, feet like glowing bronze, voice like rushing waters, face like the sun shining in all its brilliance.1

His perfect divine purity, His eyes that see everything with fiery judgment, His strong and steady nature, His mighty authority, and a glory so bright it’s almost too much to bear\\!

Isaiah (Isaiah 6:1-5)

Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty, train of his robe filled the temple, seraphim calling “Holy, holy, holy”.6

His ultimate highness and role as King above all kings, His incredible holiness that fills everything He made, the beautiful worship He gets from angels, and how small we feel next to His pure presence.

Moses (Exodus 33:18-23, cf. This table just shows us, that even though each vision was unique, they all point to one thing: God showing His amazing glory and holiness using symbols, not like a literal snapshot.

Why Does the Bible Say No One Can See God and Live?

There’s a powerful verse in Exodus 33:20 where God tells Moses, “You cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live.”¹ that might sound a little scary I want to encourage you, friend. It’s not because God is trying to hide or be mean. It’s because His glory, His purity, is so incredibly overwhelming! Think of it like this: you can’t stare right into the sun, can you? It’s too bright, too powerful for our eyes.

Well, God’s glory is infinitely more radiant, infinitely more powerful than that!1 In our current human state, with our imperfections, we’re just not built to handle the full, direct blast of His perfect holiness and majesty.¹ It’s not a punishment; it’s just the reality of how pure He is and where we are right now. But here’s the good news, the message of hope! The Bible promises that one day, this will change. First John 3:2 says, “we shall see Him as He is”.¹

That’s a promise from God, friend! So, even though we can’t see His full face right an amazing future is waiting for us, a time when we’ll experience His glorious presence in a brand-new, complete way. That statement, “no one can see God and live,” really shows us how sin created a gap between a perfectly holy God and us.

But God, in His love, always wants a relationship, and His holiness is absolute. The “death” it talks about isn’t God striking someone down in anger more like what would naturally happen if our imperfect selves met His perfect glory head-on. This helps us understand why God graciously chose to show Himself in special ways, and through Jesus, who perfectly bridges that gap.

Did People in the Bible Ever Truly See God? (Exploring Theophanies)

So, if the Bible says no one can see God’s face and live, you might be asking, “Well, did anyone in the Bible ever really see God?” And the answer is yes in very special, God-ordained ways! These amazing appearances are called “theophanies,” which just means “God appearing”.⁶ these weren’t encounters with God the Father in all His unveiled glory they were times God showed Himself in a way people could experience and still live. Think about Abraham – the Bible says “the LORD appeared” to him like three men.⁶ And Abraham knew it was special; he bowed down and welcomed them.

Then there’s Jacob, who wrestled with a “Man” all night and then said, “I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved”.⁷ And who could forget Moses at the burning bush? The “Angel of the LORD” appeared in the flames, and God spoke to him right out of that bush!6 \\

These were real encounters with the Most High! God used things like fire, clouds, or even a human-like form to show His presence and tell us something about Himself.⁶ And you know what’s really exciting? These Old Testament appearances were like sneak peeks, pointing forward to the greatest appearance of all: when Jesus Christ, God’s Son, came to earth as a man.⁶

These theophanies were like signposts showing God’s incredible desire to connect with us, His willingness to come down to our level. It shows He’s a relational God! Many wise scholars believe that when the “Angel of the LORD” appeared, it was actually Jesus Himself, before He was born in Bethlehem 8, showing God’s amazing plan from the very beginning.

How is Jesus the “Image of the Invisible God”? Can We See God Through Him?

This is one of the most exciting truths in all of Scripture! The Apostle Paul tells us in Colossians 1:15 that Jesus is “the image of the invisible God”.⁸ If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus! He is God showing Himself to us in a way we can see, understand, and connect with. Jesus Himself said it so clearly to Philip, “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9).⁶ What a powerful statement! In Jesus, all the fullness of God decided to live in a human body (Colossians 2:9).⁹ So, when you see Jesus’s compassion, His forgiveness, His power to heal, and His incredible love for every single person, you are seeing the very heart and character of God the Father!9 The word for “image” there, eikon, means more than just a picture. It means a perfect likeness that shares the very essence of what it represents.⁸

So, Jesus isn’t just a copy; He è God, revealing the Father to us. Even before He came as a baby, Jesus, the Son of God, was with God the Father, and He’s the One through whom everything was made.⁸ That’s why so many great thinkers in the church have believed that when God appeared in human-like forms in the Old Testament, like the “Angel of the LORD,” that was Jesus!8

So, when you see Jesus in movies like “The Chosen,” or read in the Gospels about Him laughing, crying, and always loving – that’s a true window into the heart of our loving Heavenly Father.⁸ Wanting to “see” God finds its ultimate answer in getting to know Jesus. It’s about seeing His life and character, which is a much deeper “seeing” than just with our eyes.

If We’re Made in God’s Image, Do We Physically Resemble Him?

The Bible tells us something amazing in Genesis: God created us, humankind, in His “image” and “likeness” (Genesis 1:26-27).⁵ That’s a powerful statement about your value and your purpose! But does it mean we look like God physically? Well, since we know God is Spirit and doesn’t have a physical body like ours 3, being made in His “image” can’t be about a physical resemblance. So, what does it mean, friend? It means we’re created to be His representatives here on earth, to reflect parts of His wonderful character.¹â° Think of it this way:

Some say it’s about the divine we have, like the ability to reason, to be creative, to love, to know right from wrong, and to have a soul that’s aware of God and ourselves.¹â°

Others focus on our relationships. We’re made for connection – with God and with each other. Our ability to love and have empathy reflects God’s own loving nature.¹â°

And some see it in our purpose or function: God gave us the job of taking care of His creation, like His managers on earth.¹â°

So, when you show kindness, when you create something beautiful, when you forgive someone, or when you stand up for what’s right, you are reflecting the image of God! It’s not about how tall you are or what color your hair is; it’s about your heart and how you live a life that honors your Creator.¹â° This means every single person has incredible, built-in value and dignity, because every one of us is made in God’s image.¹â° You are valuable, you are special to God, and you have a God-given purpose! Being made in God’s image isn’t just something you have; it’s something you live out. And for those who believe in Jesus, it’s about that image being restored. This should change how you see yourself and, just as importantly, how you treat every single person you meet, because they too carry that divine spark.

What Did the Early Church Fathers Teach About God’s Form?

After the time of the apostles, there were these really wise leaders and thinkers in the church called the Church Fathers. They helped explain and defend what Christians believe, and what they taught about God’s nature is so important for us today. These Church Fathers were all on the same page: God does not have a physical body.¹¹ They taught that God is “simple,” meaning He’s not made up of different parts like we are.¹¹ One of them, Irenaeus, said God is “all mind, all spirit, all thought, all intelligence, all reason”.¹¹

Another, Clement of Alexandria, taught that God is “without form” and has no body.¹¹ Augustine, a giant in Christian thought, explained that God can’t change, and having a physical body means you’re subject to change.¹¹ Didymus the Blind said God has a “spiritual nature, having neither ears nor organs of speech,” and isn’t “composed of no numbers and parts”.¹¹ Hilary of Poitiers also said God is without a body and isn’t made of different limbs.¹¹ This was so important to them because if God had a body, He’d be limited, He could change, He could be divided up – and that’s not the infinite, eternal, unchanging God we know!3

They stood firm on what the Bible says: “God is Spirit” (John 4:24), meaning He’s purely spiritual, not physical.¹¹ And when the Bible talks about God’s “hand” or “eyes,” they understood that God was just speaking our language, helping us understand His power and care, not giving us a literal anatomy lesson.³ This teaching from long ago helps us avoid wrong ideas about God and helps us worship Him “in spirit and in truth,” just like Jesus said.¹¹ The Fathers’ strong stance on God being simple and without a body was key to setting Christian belief apart from pagan ideas of gods with human forms and flaws, and also from purely materialistic views. It protects our understanding of God’s amazing transcendence and uniqueness, giving us a solid rock for our faith.

Since God is Invisible, How Can We Experience His Presence Today?

If we can’t see God with our natural eyes, how can we experience His presence right here, right now? That’s where your faith comes alive! God’s presence isn’t about what you see; it’s a spiritual connection that can be more real and powerful than anything you can touch. You can feel God’s presence in those quiet moments when you pray, when you pour out your heart and just feel His peace wash over you.¹⁴

You can find Him when you open His Word, the Bible, and a verse just jumps out at you, giving you the exact guidance or comfort you need.¹⁴ I want to encourage you to look for God in your everyday life, because He is everywhere!16 He might show up in an unexpected kindness from someone, or in the breathtaking beauty of a sunset – the Bible says creation itself declares His glory! (Romans 1:20, Psalm 19) 16 Maybe it’s a song that lifts your spirit and speaks right to your heart.¹⁶

That feeling deep inside, that reassurance that you are loved and guided – that’s God whispering to you, friend.¹⁶ And here’s the best part: God’s presence is always available to you.¹⁵ The key is to tune in! Slow down from all the busyness, talk to Him, pay attention to those little nudges, and press in for a deeper relationship.¹⁵ When you worship and give thanks, you’re stepping right into His presence (Psalm 100:4-5)!15 And get ready, because God is poised to do new and unprecedented things in your life! 19 He desires to show His favor, abundance, and joy in fresh ways.¹⁹

By focusing on His promises rather than on problems, you can magnify His goodness in your life.²¹ Developing a habit of blessing others with your words of encouragement can also open pathways for God’s blessings in your own life, leading to experiences and opportunities previously unimagined.²² Because God is invisible, we have to develop our “spiritual senses,” 17 that intentional awareness to notice His presence and His work. This makes your relationship with God active and exciting, not passive. It means being open to His often gentle and amazing ways of moving in your life!

How Does God Reveal Himself if Not Through a Physical Form?

Even though God doesn’t have a physical form that we can just look at, don’t ever think He’s distant or unknowable. No, God is always revealing Himself to us in so many wonderful ways because He wants us to know Him!

One of the biggest ways God shows Himself is through His amazing creation. Just look at a beautiful sunrise, feel the power of the ocean, or see the incredible design in a tiny flower—all of nature shouts about a Creator! Like the Bible says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands” (Psalm 19:1).¹⁶ Everything He made points to a powerful, wise, and awesome Designer.¹⁶

God also reveals Himself through His Word, the Bible. This precious book is His message to us, full of His promises, His wisdom, stories of His faithfulness, and guidance for our lives.¹⁴ When you open up the Scriptures, you’re encountering God’s voice and His heart for you.

And, of course, the most personal and clearest way God revealed Himself is through His Son, Jesus Christ. We’ve talked about this it’s so important: Jesus is the perfect image of the invisible God.⁸ In Jesus’s life, His teachings, His death, and His resurrection, we see God’s heart, His character, and His incredible love in action.

Then, God reveals Himself through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is God’s active presence with you and in you today. Sometimes the Bible describes the Spirit like wind or breath – you can’t see it it’s incredibly powerful!4 The Holy Spirit guides you, comforts you, shows you what’s right, helps you understand spiritual truths, and empowers you to live a life that honors God.⁴ You might feel this as an inner peace, a gentle nudge in a certain direction, or just a deep knowing that God loves you.

And finally, God reveals Himself through your own personal experiences and through other believers. It could be an answered prayer, an unexpected blessing, a moment where everything just becomes clear, or the love and support you feel from your church family.¹⁴ When people share their stories of how God has worked in their lives, His light and His reality shine for others to see.¹⁴ God uses so many ways to reach us—our minds (through creation), His words (through the Bible), personal connection (through Jesus), inner guidance (through the Holy Spirit), and community (through His people). He makes sure His love and truth are accessible to everyone who is looking for Him!

What Hope Do We Have of Seeing God in the Future?

This is the most glorious hope we have as Christians: the promise that one day, we will see God “face to face” in all His unveiled glory when we get to heaven! Right we walk by faith, not by what we can see (2 Corinthians 5:7), but the Bible gives us a clear and wonderful promise about what’s waiting for us.

The apostle John tells us in 1 John 3:2, “now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is”.¹ Did you catch that? We shall see Him as He is! That means a time is coming when all the things that cloud our spiritual vision now—sin, our human limitations—will be completely gone!

The book of Revelation gives us even more exciting glimpses of this future glory. John heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God… They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads” (Revelation 21:3, 22:4).⁶ Can you imagine anything more wonderful than to see God’s face directly and live in His amazing, glorious presence forever?

This isn’t just wishful thinking, friend.
