Bishop Mark Maigida Nzukwein says displaced families and communities who daily face threats of violence in Nigeria are in great need of spiritual and material support.<\/p>\n

Since being appointed the first bishop of the Diocese of Wukari, located in Nigeria\u2019s Taraba state, by Pope Francis in 2022, Nzukwein has seen the destruction of at least 325 Catholic places of worship<\/a> by Islamic extremists.<\/p>\n

\u201cChristians here are really suffering,\u201d the bishop told CNA in an interview. \u201cThe first thing we need from people is their prayerful support.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSecondly, definitely we need material support to help rehabilitate some of our people who are traumatized from the violence that has been very recurrent,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Reports released this year by the organizations Aid to the Church in Need<\/a> \u304a\u3088\u3073 \u30aa\u30fc\u30d7\u30f3\u30fb\u30c9\u30a2\u30fc\u30ba<\/a> have shown that violent attacks against unarmed victims, many of whom are Christians, are on the rise in the African nation.<\/p>\n

According to the bishop of Wukari, the sense of fear and helplessness is a great suffering that impacts the physical and spiritual well-being of those to whom he ministers. <\/p>\n

\u201cOver 300,000 people are displaced,\u201d Nzukwein told CNA. \u201cI go around to celebrate Mass for some of these communities who are staying in schools.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut on the other hand, we\u2019re still happy that we are experiencing growth even in those IDP [internally displaced people] camps,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are experiencing the joy of their faith,\u201d he continued. \u201cThey know they are suffering but they know that God is also present and they know this will not last forever.\u201d<\/p>\n

In light of the ongoing multilayered crisis in Nigeria, Father George Ehusani from Kogi state collaborated with the country\u2019s National Universities Commission to establish a new Psycho-Spiritual Institute campus in Abuja<\/a> to educate Christian leaders and laypeople in trauma counseling.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese things are very much needed, but we find it very difficult to raise funds to run those workshops and training,\u201d he told CNA. <\/p>\n

Across the country\u2019s Middle Belt region, an area often described as the \u201cfood basket\u201d of the nation, several Christian families have witnessed their homes and farms being taken by force.   <\/p>\n

Elizabeth, a member of the Church of Christ in Nations whose family is living in Jos, Taraba state, told CNA in a phone interview that international organizations should focus efforts to assist farmers whose \u201csources of livelihood\u201d have been destroyed.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of Nigeria\u2019s food comes from the north \u2014 from places like Plateau and Benue \u2014 and, due to the rising frequency of attacks, people are not able to go to the farms as usual,\u201d she said. \u201cFood is becoming really expensive [and] so this trickles down to everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elizabeth told CNA many people have now become \u201caccustomed\u201d to violent attacks targeting Christian communities. <\/p>\n

Recalling when St. Finbarr\u2019s Catholic Church in Jos was bombed in 2012, she said she was attending a Sunday service nearby at the time when she suddenly felt a \u201cvibration in the ground\u201d beneath her.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou hear the sound of the blast, you know what is going on, and you just stay in church \u2014 I mean we are Christians, right?\u201d she said. \u201cYou\u2019re just thinking, \u2018Well if my church is next it just means that I get to be with the Lord.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the reality of Christians every day in the north [of Nigeria].\u201d<\/p>\n
