The Ultimate “Yes!” to His Divine Identity

Throughout His ministry, Jesus said things that were astonishing and, to many people back then, even shocking. He claimed an authority that belonged only to God, forgiving sins, talking about God as His Father in a way no one else ever had, and saying that He was the way, the truth, and the life. The Resurrection is God the Father’s powerful confirmation of all these claims! By raising Jesus from the dead, God declared that Jesus is the powerful Son of God, the promised Messiah, and the rightful Lord of all who has conquered death itself! 5 To predict your own death and resurrection and then actually do it – that shows a power over life and death that points straight to God’s divine power and identity. This changes how we see Jesus, from just a historical figure or a wise teacher to our divine Lord.

You Can Trust His Promises!

As we’ve seen, Jesus didn’t just let death happen to Him; He foretold it, along with His resurrection, many times. 7 For instance, He talked about the “sign of Jonah,” comparing His three days in the tomb to Jonah’s three days in the great fish (Matthew 12:40). He told His disciples plainly that He would be killed and on the third day be raised to life (Matthew 16:21). The fact that He fulfilled this most incredible and verifiable promise gives so much credibility to all His other teachings and promises. 7 If He was true in this most astounding thing, it gives us a deep reason to trust everything else He said about God, salvation, and the coming Kingdom.

More Than Just a Good Teacher: He is Lord!

The great writer C.S. Lewis famously argued that because of the claims Jesus made, He couldn’t just be a great moral teacher. He had to be either a liar (knowingly tricking people), a lunatic (sincerely believing false things about being God), or Lord. The Resurrection gives us the most powerful evidence for the “Lord” option. 7 A dead “Lord” doesn’t make sense. A teacher who claims to be God but stays in the grave is either mistaken or trying to fool people. But a teacher who claims to be God, predicts His resurrection, and then clearly conquers death presents a powerful case for His lordship. The Resurrection tips the scales decisively, affirming His divine authority and truthfulness. Pope St. Clement I of Rome, writing way back in the late first century, really emphasized this. He said that the Master is always proving to us that there will be a future resurrection, “of which he has made the Lord Jesus Christ the firstling, by raising him from the dead.” 11 This teaching gave such personal hope to early Christians, assuring them that death wasn’t the end.
• He Rose in a Real Body! The Church Fathers were very clear that Jesus rose physically and bodily, not just as a spirit or an idea. St. Ignatius of Antioch, in the early second century, passionately defended the bodily nature of Christ’s resurrection. • Victory Over Death, Darkness, and All Evil! The Resurrection was proclaimed as Christ’s decisive and ultimate triumph over all the forces of evil, decay, and darkness. St. John Chrysostom, in the fourth century, famously preached in his Easter Sermon: “O Death, where is your sting? O Hell, where is your victory? Christ is risen, and you are overthrown. Instead, they’re based on events that are said to have happened in real, verifiable human history! 3 The Resurrection of Jesus is presented in the New Testament not as something you just have to blindly believe as a historical event that has evidence to back it up. 6 faith is absolutely essential to grasp its spiritual meaning the historical claim itself invites us to take a look. Even some people who are skeptical admit that strong historical arguments can be made for the Resurrection, finding it a believable explanation for those who already believe God exists. 6

So Many People Saw Him! The Power of Eyewitnesses

A major line of evidence is all the eyewitness testimony recorded in the New Testament. Many different people and diverse groups claimed to have seen Jesus alive after His crucifixion and burial. These appearances reportedly happened in various places, at different times, and over a period of several weeks. 13

The Apostle Paul, writing only about 25 years after these events, lists several key witnesses in what’s considered a very early Christian statement of belief (1 Corinthians 15:3-8). This list includes appearances to Cephas (that’s Peter), then to the Twelve disciples, then to more than 500 brothers and sisters at one time (most of whom were still alive when Paul wrote!), then to James (Jesus’ own brother, who was a skeptic at first), then to all the apostles, and finally to Paul himself. 14 The Gospels add even more accounts, including appearances to Mary Magdalene and other women, to two disciples on the road to Emmaus, and to the disciples by the Sea of Galilee. 13 In total, the New Testament records at least ten different times Jesus appeared to well over five hundred people! 14

It’s really interesting that women, especially Mary Magdalene, were the first witnesses. 14 In first-century Jewish culture, a woman’s testimony wasn’t usually given the same weight as a man’s. If the story was just made up later, it’s unlikely that women would have been presented as the first and most important witnesses. This detail actually makes the accounts feel more authentic.

The Tomb Was Empty!

Another crucial piece of evidence is the empty tomb. 13 Jesus was buried in a known tomb, one belonging to Joseph of Arimathea, who was a member of the Sanhedrin (the Jewish ruling council). 16 The tomb was sealed and, according to Matthew’s Gospel, guarded by Roman soldiers. The Jewish authorities asked for this guard because they were afraid the disciples might try to steal the body. 13 But despite all these precautions, the tomb was found empty on the third day. The grave clothes were reportedly left behind, neatly folded, and the huge stone that sealed the entrance was rolled away. 13

The authorities, who had every reason to disprove the disciples’ claims that Jesus had risen, were never able to produce Jesus’ body. 13 If they had, the growing Christian movement would have been stopped in its tracks. The empty tomb, right there in the city where Jesus was crucified and buried, became a powerful, silent witness.

His Followers Were Radically Changed!

Even Skeptics Believed!

The conversion of well-known skeptics also adds weight to the evidence. James, the brother of Jesus, wasn’t a follower during Jesus’ earthly ministry. But he became a leader in the Jerusalem church after, according to Paul, the risen Christ appeared to him. 14 And Saul of Tarsus, later known as the Apostle Paul, was a passionate persecutor of the early Christians. His dramatic conversion happened after what he described as an encounter with the resurrected and glorified Jesus on the road to Damascus. 6 These conversions are hard to explain without a genuine, life-changing experience. These transformative events exemplify how deep-rooted skepticism can be overturned by profound experiences that change one’s beliefs and purpose. Much like Solomon’s wisdom and heavenly fate, these individuals were granted insights that led them to new paths of faith and leadership. Their journeys underscore the impact of personal encounters with the divine, which can shift even the most fervent doubters into devoted advocates.

The way these appearances are described—as physical, tangible, and interactive, involving conversations, shared meals, and being touched, happening over a period of time to various groups—argues against simpler explanations like just grief-induced hallucinations or stories that developed over time. 13 Hallucinations are usually private and personal, not shared by large, diverse groups in different places over weeks. The quality and variety of the encounters described in the New Testament present a real challenge to purely psychological explanations.

But the empty tomb points in the exact opposite direction! It confirms the inherent goodness of God’s physical creation. 19 Because Jesus was raised bodily, it means God’s plan for redemption includes transforming and perfecting the physical, not getting rid of it. This is huge! It encourages us to see salvation as something that touches every part of us, spirit and body, and even extends to renewing all of creation – a new heaven and a new earth!

Victory You Can See!

The empty tomb is the real, undeniable proof of Jesus’ decisive victory over death! 2 Death, humanity’s ultimate enemy, couldn’t hold Him. That stone rolled away, the grave clothes left behind, and the absence of the body all silently shout about a power greater than death itself. It shows that Jesus has power over the grave and, through Him, offers the gift of eternal life to everyone who believes! 2

Strength and Hope for Your Journey!

The reality of the empty tomb isn’t just a historical fact to know about; it’s a present source of strength, courage, and hope for us as believers when we face life’s inevitable doubts, challenges, and fears. 2 Knowing that God brought Jesus out of that grave, turning the ultimate tragedy into the ultimate triumph, gives us confidence that He can bring good out of even the most desperate situations. Cowards No More Courageous Champions!

Before they encountered the risen Jesus, the disciples were a picture of fear and disappointment. When Jesus was arrested, they scattered; Peter, one of His closest denied even knowing Him three times! 7 They were hiding behind locked doors “for fear of the Jewish leaders” (John 20:19), their hopes seemingly crushed by the crucifixion. 20 Some even started to go back to their old lives, thinking it was all over (Luke 24:21).

But then, within a short time, these same individuals were transformed into fearless and articulate proclaimers of Jesus’ resurrection! They stood boldly before the very authorities who had condemned Jesus, preached in the temple, faced prison, beatings, and, for most of them, violent martyrdom, all without ever backing down from their testimony that Jesus was alive! 8 What could possibly explain such a radical shift from terrible fear to unwavering conviction, from despair to unshakeable joy, from having no purpose to a world-changing mission? 20 The New Testament consistently points to one thing: their personal encounters with the risen Lord Jesus Christ! 7

This transformation wasn’t just individual; it was corporate and explosive! Empowered by the Holy Spirit, whose coming was directly linked to Jesus’ resurrection and His being lifted to God’s right hand, these transformed disciples, like Peter on the day of Pentecost, began to preach the good news of the risen Christ, and thousands responded in faith! 8 The Christian Church was born out of the powerful conviction that Jesus had conquered death.

Transformation for You Today: New Life in Christ!

The incredible power that raised Jesus from the dead and so dramatically transformed His first followers is not just a story from the past; it’s a living reality available to us as believers today! 1 The Apostle Paul taught that through faith in Christ, we are united with Him in His death and resurrection.
