In een besluit met zowel spirituele als humanitaire betekenis keurde paus Leo XIV op 24 juni de verkiezing goed van pater Francesco Ielpo, lid van de Orde van Minderbroeders, als de nieuwe custos van het Heilig Land en bewaker van de berg Sion, als opvolger van Pater Francesco Patton<\/a>, die negen jaar dienst in deze gevoelige rol afsloot.<\/p>\n

De benoeming volgde op een verkiezing door de minister-generaal van de franciscaanse orde en zijn raad, in lijn met een langdurige traditie die de historische continu\u00efteit weerspiegelt van de missie van de franciscanen in het land waar Jezus Christus liep.<\/p>\n

Geboren in Lauria, Itali\u00eb, in 1970, legde Ielpo zijn plechtige geloften af in 1998 en werd hij in 2000 tot priester gewijd. Zijn dienst omvatte onderwijs, administratie en pastorale zorg. Hij gaf godsdienstonderwijs, was hoofd van het \u201cFranciscanum Luzzago\u201d-instituut in Brescia en bekleedde kerkelijke verantwoordelijkheden als commissaris voor het Heilig Land in Lombardije en later in Noord-Itali\u00eb. Sinds 2022 was hij voorzitter van de Holy Land Foundation, naast andere organisatorische rollen binnen de Italiaanse franciscaanse provincies.<\/p>\n

Ielpo aanvaardt zijn nieuwe rol op een uiterst complex moment, zowel regionaal als spiritueel. Het Heilig Land kampt met groeiende politieke en militaire spanningen, een scherpe daling van het aantal pelgrims, een krimpende lokale christelijke bevolking en een verergerende humanitaire crisis in Gaza en op de Westelijke Jordaanoever.<\/p>\n

In deze context gaat de verantwoordelijkheid van de nieuwe custos veel verder dan het beschermen van heilige plaatsen; het omvat pastorale aanwezigheid, humanitaire steun, interreligieuze en interculturele dialoog en het waarborgen van de wortels van het christendom in zijn geboorteplaats. De overleden paus Franciscus benadrukte ooit dat \u201chet dienen van het Heilig Land een vredesmissie is te midden van conflict, een ruimte voor nederigheid en spirituele moed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ielpo volgt Patton op, die diende van 2016 tot 2025. Tijdens zijn ambtstermijn werd Patton geconfronteerd met aanzienlijke uitdagingen, waaronder de COVID-19-pandemie en het vrijwel volledig stilleggen van pelgrimstochten naar het Heilig Land. Ondanks deze beproevingen ondersteunde hij grote restauratieprojecten, nam hij deel aan humanitaire inspanningen zoals steun voor kinderen in Gaza en documenteerde hij zijn ervaring in een spirituele memoire getiteld \u201cLike a Pilgrimage: My Days in the Holy Land.\u201d<\/p>\n

De franciscaanse custodie, die meer dan 800 jaar geleden begon met de aankomst van de heilige Franciscus van Assisi in het Heilig Land, is niet louter een religieuze plicht.
