Rechter Jaiza Page van Franklin County verklaarde op 24 juni het Educational Choice Scholarship (EdChoice) Program, dat financiering biedt<\/a> aan leerlingen van openbare scholen om priv\u00e9scholen in de staat te bezoeken, ongrondwettelijk. Ze stelde dat het schadelijk is voor het openbaar onderwijs door middelen naar priv\u00e9scholen te sluizen, waaronder katholieke instellingen.<\/p>\n

Page zei in haar uitspraak<\/a> dat de eisers \u201cbuiten redelijke twijfel hadden bewezen dat het EdChoice-voucherprogramma Artikel VI Sectie 2 van de Grondwet van Ohio schendt\u201d, dat religieuze scholen verbiedt<\/a> om \u201cenig exclusief recht op, of controle over, enig deel van de schoolfondsen van [de] staat te hebben.\u201d<\/p>\n

Page schreef ook dat \u201cde staat geen priv\u00e9scholen mag financieren ten koste van openbare scholen of op een manier die zijn verplichting aan het openbaar onderwijs ondermijnt.\u201d<\/p>\n

Er wordt verwacht dat er tegen de uitspraak in beroep zal worden gegaan. Het 10th District Court of Appeals zal de zaak als volgende behandelen, waarna deze naar het Hooggerechtshof van Ohio kan gaan.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe blijven ervan overtuigd dat het EdChoice-programma zal zegevieren in de beroepsprocedure,\u201d zei Brian Hickey, uitvoerend directeur van de Catholic Conference of Ohio, in een verklaring van 24 juni<\/a>. Hickey noemde steun voor het programma \u201ceen kwestie van sociale rechtvaardigheid.\u201d<\/p>\n
