It looked promising. Similarly, the religious life of first-century Jerusalem was full of outward signs: a magnificent Temple, elaborate rituals, and respected teachers of the Law. It had all the \"leaves\" of religion. But when Jesus, who was hungry for righteousness, came looking for the \"fruit\" of true faith, justice, and mercy, He found none. The curse and the subsequent withering of the tree symbolized God's coming judgment on a nation that had the form of religion but lacked the substance of a real relationship with Him.\u2078<\/p>\n

The Gospel reading, from John chapter 12, transports us to the home of Lazarus, Mary, and Martha in Bethany.\u00b2\u2070 Here, in the warmth of friendship, Mary performs an act of extravagant love. She takes a pound of costly perfumed oil, made of pure nard, and anoints Jesus' feet, drying them with her hair. The fragrance fills the entire house.\u00b2\u00b9 Judas Iscariot, the one who would betray Him, objects to this \"waste,\" suggesting the money could have been given to the poor. But his objection is rooted in greed, not charity.\u00b2\u2074 Jesus defends Mary's beautiful gesture, saying, \"Leave her alone. Let her keep this for the day of my burial\".\u00b2\u2070<\/p>\n

By focusing on this intimate scene, the liturgy invites us into the internal movements of Holy Week.       Nu we onze reflecties op de Goede Maandag afsluiten, blijven we achter met een krachtige en onvermijdelijke uitdaging: de roep om authenticiteit. Deze dag stript de feestelijke vernislaag van Palmzondag weg en vraagt ons om naar binnen te kijken. Het stelt de aard van ons geloof ter discussie: Is het echt? Is het puur? Is het vruchtbaar?.\u2079<\/p>\n

      De Jezus die we op Goede Maandag ontmoeten is niet passief of sentimenteel. Hij is vol van een goddelijke, rechtvaardige ijver die voortkomt uit oneindige liefde.\u00b3\u2076 Zijn reiniging van de Tempel en Zijn vervloeking van de vijgenboom waren geen daden van kleingeestige woede, maar daden van een liefdevolle arts die Zijn volk probeerde te genezen van de kanker van hypocrisie.\u00b9\u2074 Hij zag een aanbidding die hol was geworden en een religie die onvruchtbaar was geworden, en Hij hield te veel van Zijn volk om hen zo achter te laten.<\/p>\n

      Deze dramatische acties vormden het toneel voor de rest van de Goede Week. Ze intensiveerden het conflict met de religieuze autoriteiten, verhardden hun harten en zetten Jezus vastberaden op het pad naar het kruis.\u00b3\u2077 Toch krijgen we, zelfs op deze dag van confrontatie, het prachtige beeld van de zalving in Bethani\u00eb.       Let us, therefore, move forward from Holy Monday into the rest of this sacred week with courage and purpose. Let us carry with us the image of a cleansed temple, and pray for the grace to have our own hearts continually purified. Let us remember the withered fig tree, and commit to cultivating a faith that bears real fruit in the world.
