Today, Aug. 15, is the feast of the Assumption<\/a>, a solemnity commemorating the end of the Virgin Mary\u2019s earthly life and the assumption of her body and soul into heaven. The day also marks the anniversary of the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN). <\/p>\n

On this day in 1981, EWTN\u2019s foundress, Mother Mary Angelica of the Annunciation, started her television show out of a garage studio in Alabama. The broadcast launched what is now the largest global Catholic media network in the world. (Note: CNA is a service of EWTN News, an affiliate of EWTN.)<\/p>\n

As Catholics celebrate the Assumption and EWTN commemorates 44 years of spreading the Eternal Word, we look back at what Mother Angelica said about Jesus\u2019 mother and her assumption into heaven.<\/p>\n

Assumption of Mary <\/h2>\n

\u201cThis is the feast of Our Lady\u2019s assumption, and a lot of people don\u2019t understand that,\u201d Mother Angelica, a Poor Clare of Perpetual Adoration, said during an Aug. 15, 2000, EWTN broadcast<\/a>. \u201cThey get it all mixed up with Our Lady\u2019s immaculate conception. And it\u2019s different.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Assumption is a fairly new feast day in the Church, but the holiday has roots in the earliest centuries of Christian belief. Mother Angelica explained to her audience that \u201cwhen all the apostles heard Our Lady had died, they all went where she was, except Thomas.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cSt. Thomas, according to tradition, was always late, always late,\u201d Mother Angelica joked. \u201cWe all have somebody like that in our family. They\u2019re always late.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cSo when he came, they opened up the [tomb] and she was gone\u2026 And from the very beginning of Christianity, it was always believed that she was assumed into heaven. It just makes sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

It makes sense, Mother Angelica said, \u201cbecause she was so pure and so holy. There was no reason for her to rot away like we\u2019re going to.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur Lady could never even commit one little sin. So what does she do? She benefits by all the graces, we will benefit by the blood of Jesus \u2014 by redemption,\u201d she said. \u201cYou say, \u2018Well, why should she be so different?\u2019 Well, because she was created by God and before time began, he had her in his mind to be the mother of his Son \u2014 the Eternal Word.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t even think for a half a second that the mother of God could be in the hands of Satan. That would defile the temple,\u201d she said, adding: \u201cI mean, that\u2019s common sense. You don\u2019t need anything else to really realize that God\u2019s temple had to be absolutely perfect for his sake.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Mary was born perfect, Mother Angelica said, \u201cwe were all born with original sin, and we have consequences for original sin, even after baptism.\u201d We experience \u201cjealousy, anger, and oversensitivity. We\u2019re born with a lot of things that are not like Jesus. And so we have to overcome these things.\u201d<\/p>\n

But eventually, \u201cOur Lady\u2019s assumption is something we\u2019re all going to have,\u201d because \u201cwe\u2019re all going to rise\u2026 the day will come at the end of the world when God will breathe and say: \u2018Rise.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Secret of holiness\u2019<\/h2>\n

\u201cOur Lady had to be awesome, because she always said yes to God. That\u2019s the secret of holiness,\u201d Mother Angelica said. \u201cOh, you don\u2019t have to be bright, you don\u2019t have to be a genius, you don\u2019t have to build buildings, you don\u2019t have to do any of those things. You have to do God\u2019s will with love and sacrifice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ultimately, it \u201call comes down to love,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd you only do God\u2019s will because you love. Our Lady always loved God and always did his will with perfect union.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the solemnity of Mary\u2019s assumption, \u201cwe should thank God that he created such a woman,\u201d Mother Angelica said. \u201cThere had to be somebody like her. And only from her, only from this holy, perfect woman, could the Eternal Word come.\u201d<\/p>\n
