De zalige Pier Giorgio Frassati, geboren op 6 april 1901 in een vooraanstaande en rijke Italiaanse familie, werd al snel na zijn dood op 4 juli 1925 op 24-jarige leeftijd een populair rolmodel. Hij zou tijdens het Jubeljaar 2025 van de Katholieke Kerk heilig verklaard kunnen worden, aldus het hoofd van het Vaticaanse kantoor voor heiligverklaringen.<\/p>\n

Volgens de website die aan hem is gewijd<\/a> door de Amerikaanse katholieke bisschoppen, is Frassati al jaren \u201ceen belangrijke wereldwijde beschermheilige voor jongeren en jongvolwassenen \u2014 en heeft hij ook een speciale plek in de harten van jongeren in de Verenigde Staten. St. Johannes Paulus II riep hem uit tot beschermheilige voor de Wereldjongerendagen en noemde hem \u2018de man van de zaligsprekingen\u2019, omdat hij die zegeningen in zijn dagelijks leven belichaamde.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hier zijn 12 verbazingwekkende feiten over zijn korte maar zeer intense leven:<\/p>\n

1. Hoewel hij werd opgevoed door agnostische ouders, kwamen Frassati's neigingen om anderen te helpen al in zijn kindertijd naar voren. Toen hij als kind de deur opendeed, trof hij een bedelende moeder aan met haar zoon die geen schoenen droeg. Hij trok zijn eigen schoenen uit en gaf ze aan het kind.<\/p>\n

2. Op jonge leeftijd sloot hij zich aan bij de Maria-congregatie en het Apostolaat van het Gebed en kreeg hij toestemming om dagelijks de communie te ontvangen, wat in die tijd zeldzaam was.<\/p>\n

3. Tegelijkertijd stond hij bij zijn vrienden bekend als \u201cIl Terrore\u201d (\u201cDe Verschrikking\u201d) vanwege zijn voorliefde voor practical jokes.<\/p>\n

4. Op 17-jarige leeftijd sloot hij zich aan bij de Sint-Vincentiusvereniging en besteedde hij een groot deel van zijn vrije tijd aan de zorg voor armen, daklozen, zieken en gedemobiliseerde militairen die terugkeerden uit de Eerste Wereldoorlog.<\/p>\n

5. In 1919 sloot Frassati zich aan bij de Katholieke Studentenvereniging en de Populaire Partij, waarvan de principes gebaseerd waren op de sociale leer van de Kerk. Hij verzette zich fel tegen de opkomst van de fascistische leider Benito Mussolini en werd in Rome gevangengezet nadat hij had deelgenomen aan het protest van de Katholieke Arbeidersvereniging.<\/p>\n

6. Hij werd opmerkelijk omdat hij letterlijk alles wat hij had aan de armen gaf. Hij gebruikte zelfs zijn busgeld voor liefdadigheid en rende dan naar huis om op tijd te zijn voor de maaltijden.<\/p>\n

7. Als fervent en ervaren bergbeklimmer zag hij veel parallellen tussen het katholieke leven en zijn favoriete tijdverdrijf. Hij organiseerde regelmatig tochten in de bergen met gelegenheid voor gebed en gesprekken over het geloof tijdens de weg naar boven of beneden vanaf de top.<\/p>\n

8. Na wat zijn laatste klim zou worden, schreef hij een eenvoudig briefje op een foto: \u201cVerso L\u2019Alto\u201d (\u201cNaar de hoogten\u201d) \u2014 een uitdrukking die een populaire katholieke lijfspreuk is geworden.<\/p>\n

9. Op 24-jarige leeftijd werd Frassati erg ziek door polio. Sommige van zijn vrienden geloofden dat hij de ziekte had opgelopen van de mensen in de sloppenwijken van Turijn. In zijn laatste dagen fluisterde hij de namen van mensen die nog hulp nodig hadden aan zijn familie en vrienden die aan zijn bed stonden. Hij stierf op 4 juli 1925.<\/p>\n

10. Pier Giorgio Frassati werd in 1990 \u201cZalig\u201d verklaard door paus Johannes Paulus II, die hem een \u201cman van de zaligsprekingen\u201d en een \u201cvreugdevolle apostel van Christus\u201d noemde. 12. De populariteit van Pier Giorgio Frassati is groot onder jongeren, vooral in Amerika.
