Een priester in Missouri pleitte deze week schuldig aan het stelen van $300.000 van een kerk waar hij bijna tien jaar lang pastoor was.<\/p>\n

Pater Ignazio Medina gaf toe \u201cgestolen goederen over staatsgrenzen te hebben vervoerd\u201d na een federaal onderzoek, aldus het kantoor van de Amerikaanse procureur voor het westelijke district van Missouri in een persbericht deze week.<\/a><\/p>\n

Medina was van 2013 tot 2021 pastoor in de St. Stanislaus katholieke kerk in Wardsville, Missouri. Ambtenaren ontdekten in 2018 \u201cfinanci\u00eble onregelmatigheden\u201d in de parochie, waarna \u201ceen bankrekening die voorheen niet was gerapporteerd\u201d op de financi\u00eble documenten van de parochie werd ontdekt.<\/p>\n

De priester begon de rekening op te nemen in de jaarlijkse parochieverslagen, en in 2020 bevatte deze bijna $360.000.<\/p>\n

De pastoor werd in 2021 overgeplaatst naar een nieuwe parochie, aldus het kantoor van de procureur, waarna \u201cwerd ontdekt dat hij die bankrekening had leeggehaald.\u201d Medina had een cheque van $100.000 naar een zus in Tucson, Arizona, gestuurd en een cheque van $200.000 voor zichzelf uitgeschreven.<\/p>\n

Medina \u201cbeweerde dat de bankrekening werd gefinancierd door donaties die niet voor de parochie zelf waren bedoeld, maar voor zijn eigen discretionaire gebruik,\u201d aldus het kantoor van de aanklager.<\/p>\n

Parochianen spraken die bewering tegen en voerden aan dat hun donaties aan de parochie \u201cbedoeld waren voor parochiedoeleinden, niet voor Medina\u2019s eigen discretionaire gebruik\u201d en dat zij \u201cnooit gesprekken met Medina hebben gevoerd waarin een ander gebruik van de fondsen werd toegestaan.\u201d<\/p>\n

De priester beweerde verder dat hij \u201cdonaties terugbetaalde\u201d van de rekening en dat zijn zus in Tucson \u201ceen van de donateurs was.\u201d De zus vertelde onderzoekers echter dat ze geen geld had gedoneerd en dat de cheque van $100.000 bedoeld was voor de zorg voor haar moeder.<\/p>\n

De priester riskeert tot 10 jaar gevangenisstraf, aldus het kantoor van de aanklager.<\/p>\n

Naast de strafrechtelijke veroordeling krijgt Medina te maken met kerkelijke sancties vanwege het financi\u00eble wanbeheer, evenals een afzonderlijke overtreding met betrekking tot seksuele uitlokking.<\/p>\n

Het bisdom Jefferson City, Missouri, kondigde vorig jaar aan<\/a> dat Medina schuldig was bevonden aan \u201cmisbruik van kerkelijke macht\u201d voortvloeiend uit het financi\u00eble wanbeheer. De priester had \u201cvolledige restitutie van de ontbrekende fondsen\u201d gedaan, zei het bisdom destijds, en was ook veroordeeld tot het betalen van meer dan $25.000 om de audit- en juridische kosten van het bisdom te dekken.<\/p>\n

In januari van dit jaar werd Medina ondertussen schuldig bevonden aan seksuele uitlokking van een volwassene tijdens de biecht en werd hij permanent verboden om enig ambt in de Kerk te bekleden of biechten te horen.<\/p>\n

Het is hem ook verboden de mis op te dragen zonder uitdrukkelijke toestemming van de bisschop.<\/p>\n

\u201cIk wil duidelijk zijn dat seksuele uitlokking tijdens de biecht een heiligschennis is, een misdaad in onze Kerk en een ernstige vorm van misbruik; dit kan niet worden getolereerd,\u201d zei bisschop W. Shawn McKnight van Jefferson City destijds.<\/p>\n
