Het Vaticaan maakte woensdag bekend dat paus Leo XIV op 11 augustus pater Ignatius Wu Jianlin heeft benoemd tot hulpbisschop van Shanghai, waarbij zijn bisschopswijding vandaag plaatsvindt in het kader van het Voorlopig Akkoord<\/a> tussen de Heilige Stoel en de Volksrepubliek China.<\/p>\n

De wijding van pater Wu Jianlin wijding<\/a> in de Sint-Ignatiuskathedraal markeert een verdere ontwikkeling in de complexe relatie tussen Peking en het Vaticaan.<\/p>\n

Chinese autoriteiten hadden eerder de \u201cverkiezing\u201d van Wu aangekondigd<\/a> door een vergadering van priesters en leken op 28 april, tijdens de sede vacante<\/a> periode na het overlijden van paus Franciscus.<\/p>\n

Het Vaticaan Bollettino<\/a>, gepubliceerd op woensdag, onthulde dat de Heilige Vader de kandidatuur van Wu op 11 augustus heeft goedgekeurd.<\/p>\n

Hoewel zijn benoeming niet eerder openbaar werd gemaakt, suggereert de aankondiging dat de stap werd gezet in overeenstemming met het Vaticaan-China-akkoord.<\/p>\n

Ten tijde van de verkiezing van Wu uitten waarnemers hun bezorgdheid dat Peking het pauselijk interregnum misbruikte om controle uit te oefenen op bisschopsbenoemingen.<\/p>\n

De verklaring van het Vaticaan van woensdag bevestigt dat de nieuwe benoeming werd goedgekeurd door paus Leo XIV.<\/p>\n

Bisschop Wu (55) werd geboren op 27 januari 1970 en studeerde filosofie en theologie aan het Sheshan-seminarie in Shanghai van 1991 tot 1996. Hij werd in 1997 tot priester gewijd en vervulde een aantal rollen als geestelijke. <\/p>\n

Tussen 2013 en 2023 hielp hij het bisdom besturen tijdens de langdurige sede vacante van Shanghai en diende hij later als vicaris-generaal.<\/p>\n

Akkoord als \u2018zaadje van hoop\u2019?<\/h2>\n

Het Voorlopig Akkoord, voor het eerst ondertekend in 2018 en verlengd in 2024<\/a> voor nog eens vier jaar, stelt een systeem in waarin de Chinese autoriteiten blijkbaar kandidaten voor het bisschopsambt voordragen, die vervolgens pauselijke goedkeuring moeten krijgen voordat ze worden benoemd.<\/p>\n

De exacte voorwaarden van het omstreden akkoord<\/a> blijven echter ongepubliceerd en de manier waarop het proces wordt toegepast is herhaaldelijk onder de loep genomen.<\/p>\n

Kardinaal Pietro Parolin, de staatssecretaris van het Vaticaan, verdedigt het akkoord al lang als een instrument voor dialoog in een imperfecte situatie.<\/p>\n

In een toespraak op 11 oktober adres<\/a> ter herdenking van het Concilie van Shanghai in 1924<\/a>, omschreef Parolin het akkoord als een \u201czaadje van hoop\u201d dat, ondanks tegenslagen, op de lange termijn vruchten zou kunnen afwerpen \u201cin de verkondiging van het Evangelie, in gemeenschap met de universele Kerk en de Bisschop van Rome, en in een authentiek christelijk leven.\u201d<\/p>\n

Op dezelfde conferentie bevestigde kardinaal Luis Antonio Tagle, pro-prefect van het Dicasterie voor Evangelisatie, \u201chet werkelijke leven en de gewone dagelijkse routine van katholieke gemeenschappen in China,\u201d<\/a> zelfs als \u201cde aandacht meestal gericht is op kwesties van bisschopsbenoemingen, lokale incidenten, de betrekkingen tussen de Chinese politieke autoriteiten en de Heilige Stoel, of problemen met betrekking tot het religieuze beleid van de staat.\u201d<\/p>\n
