Paus Leo XIV veroordeelde zaterdag woeker, een praktijk die soms een uiterst zware zonde is en die spreekt van de corruptie van het hart van degenen die anderen slechts als \u201cobjecten van exploitatie\u201d zien.<\/p>\n

Woeker kan worden gedefinieerd als het vragen van te veel rente op een lening, een praktijk die al sinds de oudheid bestaat. Traditioneel leerde de Katholieke Kerk dat de zonde van woeker de daad was van het eisen van enig voordeel of winst met als enig doel het uitlenen. Dit inzicht is in de loop der tijd ge\u00ebvolueerd en de Kerk veroordeelt de algemene praktijk van het uitlenen met rente niet langer, zolang deze gematigd is.<\/p>\n

Op 18 oktober ontving de Heilige Vader de Nationale Anti-Woekerraad van Itali\u00eb in het Apostolisch Paleis in het Vaticaan. Al 30 jaar zet de raad zich in voor het \u201cbestrijden van een probleem dat een verwoestende impact heeft op de levens van zoveel mensen en gezinnen\u201d, aldus de Vaticaanse Persdienst.<\/p>\n

In het zijn toespraak,<\/a> verklaarde de paus dat \u201chet fenomeen woeker wijst op de corruptie van het menselijk hart. Het is een pijnlijk en oud verhaal, dat al in de Bijbel wordt getuigd. De profeten hekelden immers woeker, samen met uitbuiting en elke vorm van onrecht jegens de armen.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHoe ver staat God van de houding die mensen verplettert tot het punt van hen tot slaaf te maken! Het is een zware zonde, soms zeer zwaar, omdat het niet kan worden gereduceerd tot een louter boekhoudkundig probleem; woeker kan gezinnen in crisis brengen, het kan de geest en het hart uitputten tot het punt dat mensen zelfmoord als de enige uitweg gaan zien,\u201d zei de paus.<\/p>\n

Hoewel er vormen van woeker zijn die behulpzaam lijken voor mensen in financi\u00eble moeilijkheden, onthult het zich uiteindelijk \u201cvoor wat het is. De gevolgen worden vooral gedragen door kwetsbare mensen, zoals degenen die slachtoffer zijn van gokken\u201d of zoals degenen die geconfronteerd worden met \u201cmoeilijke momenten, zoals bijvoorbeeld buitengewone medische behandelingen of onverwachte uitgaven die hun middelen of die van hun gezinnen te boven gaan. Wat zich eerst presenteert als een helpende hand, wordt op de lange termijn in werkelijkheid een kwelling.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leo XIV vervolgde: \u201cwoekerachtige financi\u00eble systemen kunnen hele volkeren op de knie\u00ebn dwingen. Evenzo kunnen we niet voorbijgaan aan \u2018degenen wier woekerachtige en gierige handelwijze leidt tot de honger en dood van hun broeders in de menselijke familie\u2019 (Catechismus van de Katholieke Kerk, nr. 2269<\/a>): hun verantwoordelijkheden zijn zwaar en zij voeden structuren van onrechtvaardige zonde.\u201d<\/p>\n

Na opgeroepen te hebben tot respect voor de waardigheid van allen, vooral de zwaksten en meest kwetsbaren, drong de Heilige Vader aan: \u201cOf we herwinnen onze morele en spirituele waardigheid, of we vallen in een beerput.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jezus, Zache\u00fcs en een weg naar bekering voor woekeraars<\/h2>\n

Paus Leo verwees vervolgens naar het evangeliefragment (Lucas 19:1-10) waarin Jezus Zache\u00fcs ontmoet, de hoofd-tollenaar van Jericho, die \u201cgewend was aan misbruik, onderdrukking en pesterijen. Het was normaal voor iemand als hij om zijn positie te misbruiken om mensen uit te buiten en geld te verdienen door de zwaksten te beroven.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEn zo zoekt Jezus Zache\u00fcs op: Hij roept hem en vertelt hem dat Hij in zijn huis wil verblijven. En dan gebeurt het ondenkbare: de vrijgevigheid van Jezus overvalt de man volledig en zet hem met de rug tegen de muur. Zache\u00fcs komt tot inkeer, beseft dat hij fout zat en besluit \u2018met rente\u2019 terug te betalen!\u201d vervolgde Leo.<\/p>\n

\u201cNiemand vroeg hem om zoveel, zelfs de Moza\u00efsche wet niet. Maar het feit is dat zijn ontmoeting met Christus zijn hart transformeerde, en toen veranderde alles. Alleen vrijgevigheid is zo effectief dat het ons de betekenis van onze menselijkheid onthult,\u201d benadrukte de paus.<\/p>\n

De paus wees erop dat \u201cwanneer het najagen van winst de overhand krijgt, anderen geen mensen meer zijn, ze hebben geen gezicht meer, het zijn slechts objecten om uit te buiten; en zo verliezen we uiteindelijk onszelf en onze ziel. De bekering van degenen die zich bezighouden met woeker is net zo belangrijk als de nabijheid tot degenen die lijden onder woeker.\u201d<\/p>\n
