Mina Khajavi, een 61-jarige christelijke bekeerling, werd <\/span>vrijgelaten<\/span><\/a> uit de Iraanse Evin-gevangenis op 20 oktober na bijna twee jaar gevangenisstraf te hebben uitgezeten voor activiteiten gerelateerd aan haar christelijk geloof.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Khajavi werd, samen met verschillende andere christenen, op 30 juni 2020 gearresteerd terwijl ze een huiskerkdienst bijwoonde en beschuldigd van \u201chandelen tegen de nationale veiligheid door het promoten van zionistisch christendom.\u201d Ze <\/span>werd vastgehouden<\/span> gedurende drie weken voordat ze op borgtocht werd vrijgelaten.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2022 veroordeelde een Iraanse rechtbank Khajavi tot zes jaar gevangenisstraf, een straf die <\/span>later werd verminderd<\/span> tot twee jaar, en ze begon haar straf in januari 2024 uit te zitten in de Evin-gevangenis. De rechtbank beschouwde de initi\u00eble detentie na haar arrestatie als onderdeel van de door Khajavi uitgezeten tijd.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Autoriteiten arresteerden Khajavi tijdens een van de vele invallen die tussen 30 juni en 1 juli 2020 werden uitgevoerd op christelijke huiskerken in Iran, in Teheran, Karaj en Malayer. Een undercover informant zou informatie hebben doorgegeven aan de autoriteiten en <\/span>hielp<\/span><\/a> hen bij het blootleggen van de kerkbijeenkomsten van de christenen. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

De Evin-gevangenis staat bekend om haar erbarmelijke leefomstandigheden en de verwaarlozing van gevangenen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tijdens haar verblijf in de Evin-gevangenis werd Khajavi naar verluidt <\/span>adequate medische zorg geweigerd<\/span><\/a> voor een gebroken enkel die ze voor haar gevangenschap had opgelopen. Ze leed aan pijn en had moeite met bewegen, vooral bij het proberen het stapelbed op het tweede niveau te bereiken dat ze <\/span>had gekregen<\/span> in haar cel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Christelijke bekeerlingen worden in Iran routinematig ge\u00efntimideerd en vervolgd. Het Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI) citeerde <\/span>Artikel 18<\/span><\/a>, en rapporteerde in april 2025 dat het aantal arrestaties van christenen <\/span>zesvoudig is toegenomen<\/span><\/a> tussen 2023 en 2024.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDe meedogenloze vervolging van christenen door Iran is het afgelopen jaar in intensiteit en wreedheid toegenomen, waarbij de evangelische christelijke gemeenschap wordt uitgekozen voor gewelddadige arrestaties en verhoren, en lange gevangenisstraffen die zesvoudig zijn toegenomen,\u201d aldus CHRI. Alleen al in 2024 werden 96 christenen <\/span>veroordeeld<\/span> tot een gecombineerd totaal van 263 jaar gevangenisstraf, volgens het rapport van Artikel 18.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
