max-width: 100%\" \/><br \/>\n  <span style=\"text-align: right; font-style: italic;\">St. Thomas Aquinas\/St. John Henry Newman. \/ Credit: Public domain<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<p>ACI Prensa Staff, Oct 31, 2025 \/ 07:00 am (CNA).<\/p>\n<p>Pope Leo XIV declared St. John Henry Newman, along with St. Thomas Aquinas, as a patron saint of the Catholic Church\u2019s educational mission in his recent apostolic letter on education, \u201cDrawing New Maps of Hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the letter, the pontiff draws a connection between the two saints, separated by six centuries but united by the same mission: teaching within the Catholic Church.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Gordon, professor of Catholic social doctrine and contemporary history and literature at the \u00c1ngel Ayala Institute of Humanities, reflected on the Holy Father\u2019s letter in a recent conversation with ACI Prensa, CNA\u2019s Spanish-language news partner.<\/p>\n<h2>Union between faith and reason<\/h2>\n<p>As the Scottish professor noted, both Newman and Aquinas were theologians who promoted dialogue between the sciences, especially between faith and reason, positioning the gift of faith as a guide in the search for truth.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the apostolic letter, published on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council\u2019s declaration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/hist_councils\/ii_vatican_council\/documents\/vat-ii_decl_19651028_gravissimum-educationis_en.html\" target=\"null\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><em>Gravissimum Educationis<\/em><\/a>, the pope recalls the words of Newman, who will also be declared a doctor of the Church on Nov. 1: \u201cReligious truth is not only a part, but a condition of general knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Pope Leo, this involves an invitation to \u201crenew the commitment to knowledge that is as intellectually responsible and rigorous as it is profoundly human.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>A keen insight into modern times<\/h2>\n<p>Aquinas, known as the \u201cangelic doctor,\u201d plumbed the depths of the Christian faith \u201cin the light of Aristotle\u2019s philosophy\u201d and Christianized the ideas of the Greek philosopher, Gordon explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSt. Thomas Aquinas introduced Aristotle\u2019s philosophy into the Catholic Church at the beginning of the modern world, in the 13th century,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>For his part, Newman, who was the first rector of the Catholic University of Ireland, \u201cunified faith and reason\u201d with his keen insight into modern times.<\/p>\n<p>Gordon also noted that Newman is one of the most celebrated converts to Catholicism in recent times, making the pope\u2019s gesture \u201canother milestone marking the return to Rome\u201d that Newman himself experienced.<\/p>\n<p>Though criticized by many at the time, Newman \u201cwas among the first\u201d who \u201ddared to leave Anglicanism, which is still the official and established Church\u201d in Great Britain, and go \u201cover to the Catholic Church because he knew that\u2019s where the truth resided,\u201d Gordon said.<\/p>\n<p>Newman\u2019s conversion paved \u201cthe way for many other converts in my country and in English-speaking countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gordon said he thinks Pope Leo XIV intends to emphasize the importance of ecumenism in light of Newman\u2019s courageous and brave example: \u201cHe shows us that we must pray for the unity of the body of Christ, because division is a sin.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>A light for teaching today<\/h2>\n<p>Both saints can serve as a light for the teaching profession in today\u2019s world, Gordon emphasized, where \u201ceducation, especially at the university level, has become a kind of utilitarian vocational training where spirituality has no place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Dit verhaal <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aciprensa.com\/noticias\/118597\/leon-xiv-une-a-santo-tomas-y-newman-como-copatronos-de-la-educacion-catolica\" target=\"null\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><em>werd voor het eerst gepubliceerd<\/em><\/a><em> door ACI Prensa, de Spaanstalige nieuwspartner van CNA.
