Pater Carmelo De Palma, een priester die bekend stond als de \u201cheld van de biechtstoel\u201d, werd op 15 november zalig verklaard in Bari, Itali\u00eb.<\/p>\n

Paus Leo XIV erkende de nieuwe zalige tijdens het Angelusgebed op 16 november<\/a> op het Sint-Pietersplein, en zei dat De Palma \u201ceen diocesaan priester was die in 1961 stierf na een leven dat genereus was gewijd aan de bediening van de biecht en geestelijke begeleiding.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cMoge zijn getuigenis priesters inspireren om zich onvoorwaardelijk in te zetten voor de dienst aan Gods heilige volk,\u201d voegde hij eraan toe.<\/p>\n

De zaligverklaringmis in Itali\u00eb werd opgedragen door kardinaal Marcello Semeraro, prefect van de Dicasterie voor de Heiligverklaringen. In zijn homilie in de kathedraal van Bari benadrukte de prelaat dat \u201cspiritualiteit, wanneer deze authentiek is, altijd gepaard gaat met naastenliefde,\u201d Vatican News<\/a> meldde AsiaNews.<\/p>\n

\u201cDat onze zalige deze sacramentele broederschap in de praktijk bracht, wordt aangetoond door zowel de talrijke getuigenissen van priesters tijdens het proces voor zijn zalig- en heiligverklaring, als door de daaropvolgende toewijding van de diocesane geestelijkheid bij het bevorderen en ondersteunen van deze zaak,\u201d zei de kardinaal.<\/p>\n

Hij merkte ook op dat veel gelovigen in De Palma \u201ceen geestelijke gids vonden om vooruitgang te boeken in hun persoonlijke antwoord op die \u2018roeping die ons allen verenigt als gedoopte, levende leden van het ene volk van God: namelijk de roeping tot heiligheid.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

De Palma, zo voegde Semeraro eraan toe, was \u201cvoor talloze gelovigen een dienaar van verzoening en vergeving\u201d en \u201ceen heldere en evenwichtige gids\u201d voor degenen die zijn hulp vroegen \u201cbij het onderscheiden van Gods wil voor hun eigen leven.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wie was pater Carmelo De Palma?<\/h2>\n

De Palma was een diocesaan priester die zijn leven wijdde aan de bediening van biechtvader en geestelijke begeleiding van gelovigen, priesters, seminaristen en in het bijzonder de benedictijnse nonnen van Sint-Scholastica in Bari, Itali\u00eb.<\/p>\n

Hij werd geboren op 27 januari 1876 in Bari. Nadat hij wees was geworden, ging hij op 10-jarige leeftijd naar het seminarie in zijn geboortestad. Hij werd in 1898 in Napels tot priester gewijd.<\/p>\n

Op 17 juni 1900 werd hij benoemd tot aalmoezenier van de Basiliek van Sint-Nicolaas in Bari, waar hij diende door de mis op te dragen, te biechten en verschillende pastorale initiatieven aan te moedigen.<\/p>\n

Later werd de basiliek op bevel van de Heilige Stoel toevertrouwd aan de dominicanen, en De Palma werd benoemd tot geestelijk leidsman van de benedictijnse nonnen van Sint-Scholastica in Bari, evenals van de oblaten van Sint-Benedictus. <\/p>\n

Door de jaren heen verslechterde zijn gezondheid ernstig door chronische colitis, arteriosclerose van het hart en progressief gezichtsverlies. In februari 1961 droeg hij voor de laatste keer in het openbaar de mis op, en vanwege zijn ziekte bleef hij de eucharistie in zijn kamer vieren, waar hij ook bleef biechten.<\/p>\n

Hij stierf in Bari op 24 augustus 1961 aan hartfalen. Het wonder dat leidde tot zijn zaligverklaring was de onverklaarbare genezing van een benedictijnse non <\/a>die een ernstig ruggenmergletsel had waardoor ze niet kon lopen.<\/p>\n
