Nadat Checchio medio november 2025 arriveerde, heeft hij Aymond drie maanden lang bijgestaan in het aartsbisdom met meer dan een half miljoen katholieken in het zuidoosten van Louisiana.<\/p>\n<p>Checchio diende sinds 2016 als bisschop van Metuchen, New Jersey. Hij was van 2006 tot 2016 rector van het Pontifical North American College in Rome en heeft een doctoraat in het canoniek recht.<\/p>\n<p>Hij zei in een verklaring van het aartsbisdom op 11 februari dat zijn eerste drie maanden in New Orleans \u201czeer snel voorbij zijn gegaan terwijl ik meer leer over onze lokale Kerk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Checchio zal zijn eerste mis als aartsbisschop vieren in de St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans op Aswoensdag, 18 februari.<\/p>\n<p>Hij neemt het roer over in New Orleans terwijl het aartsbisdom werkt aan het oplossen van jarenlange faillissementsonderhandelingen met een schikking voor meer dan 600 slachtoffers van seksueel misbruik door geestelijken. In september 2025 kondigde het aartsbisdom een schikkingsvoorstel van $230 miljoen aan voor slachtoffers van seksueel misbruik door geestelijken, een verhoging ten opzichte van een eerder bod van $180 miljoen.<\/p>\n<p>Het schikkingsvoorstel volgt op vijf jaar van onderhandelingen in de Amerikaanse faillissementsrechtbank voor het oostelijk district van Louisiana, waar het op \u00e9\u00e9n na oudste katholieke aartsbisdom van het land in mei 2020 het faillissement aanvroeg.<\/p>\n<p>Aymond, een inwoner van New Orleans, leidde het aartsbisdom sinds 2009. Hij werd 75 jaar, de leeftijd waarop bisschoppen verplicht zijn hun ontslag in te dienen bij de paus, in november 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Hij werd in 1975 tot priester gewijd voor het aartsbisdom New Orleans. Zijn priesterlijke bediening richtte zich op onderwijs \u2014 waaronder het dienen als president-rector van het Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans van 1986 tot 2000 \u2014 en missionair werk in Mexico en Nicaragua.<\/p>\n<p>In 1996 werd hij benoemd tot hulpbisschop van het aartsbisdom en kreeg hij toezicht over de katholieke scholen.<\/p>\n<p>Aymond kwam eind jaren negentig onder vuur te liggen omdat hij de coach van de Sacred Heart of Jesus School in Norco, Brian Matherne, in zijn functie liet blijven gedurende enkele maanden nadat Aymond informatie had ontvangen over vermeend misbruik van een minderjarige jongen door Matherne.<\/p>\n<p>Matherne werd later gearresteerd en zit nu een gevangenisstraf van 30 jaar uit nadat hij schuld had bekend aan het misbruiken van 17 kinderen over een periode van 15 jaar die eindigde in 1999.<\/p>\n<p>Aymond gaf later zijn fout toe door Matherne in zijn functie te houden en noemde de zaak een \u201cpijnlijke ervaring \u2014 ik zal het nooit vergeten. Het hielp me om de complexiteit van pedofilie beter te begrijpen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hij werd in juni 2000 benoemd tot coadjutor-bisschop van Austin, Texas, en volgde in januari 2021 bisschop John E.
