Paus Leo XIV sprak zondag zijn nabijheid uit tot de bevolking van Madagaskar nadat twee cyclonen overstromingen en aardverschuivingen hadden veroorzaakt.<\/p>\n

\u201cIk bid voor de slachtoffers, hun families en voor allen die ernstige schade hebben geleden,\u201d zei de paus na het bidden van het Angelus op het Sint-Pietersplein op 15 februari.<\/p>\n

Vooruitblikkend op de komende vieringen van het Chinees Nieuwjaar in Oost-Azi\u00eb, zei Leo: \u201cMoge deze vreugdevolle viering familiebanden en vriendschappen versterken, vrede brengen in huizen en de samenleving, en een gelegenheid bieden om samen naar de toekomst te kijken en vrede en welvaart voor iedereen op te bouwen.\u201d<\/p>\n

In zijn reflectie<\/a> voorafgaand aan het Maria-gebed concentreerde de paus zich op het Evangelie van de dag uit de Bergrede (Mt 5,17-37), en zei dat Jezus \u201cde ware betekenis van de voorschriften van de Wet van Mozes onthult.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cZe zijn niet bedoeld om te voldoen aan een uiterlijke religieuze behoefte om zich \u2018rechtvaardig\u2019 te voelen voor God, maar om ons in een relatie van liefde met God en met onze broeders en zusters te brengen,\u201d zei hij, eraan toevoegend: \u201cDe Wet wordt precies vervuld door liefde, die haar diepe betekenis en uiteindelijke doel tot voltooiing brengt.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leo benadrukte dat \u201cware rechtvaardigheid bestaat uit liefde,\u201d en hij waarschuwde tegen het reduceren van het geloof tot het absolute minimum: \u201cHet Evangelie biedt ons deze waardevolle les: Minimale rechtvaardigheid is niet genoeg; grote liefde is nodig.\u201d<\/p>\n
