There is a room in Rome laid out to the measurements of a house that has not stood for two thousand years. Forty metres by thirteen. Sixty cubits by twenty, which is what the Book of Kings gives for the temple Solomon built and Babylon burned. Somebody in the fifteenth century took those numbers off a page and set them into a floor, and we have been walking on them ever since without looking down.
