O Papa Le\u00e3o XIV aprovou na quinta-feira a decis\u00e3o de declarar S\u00e3o John Henry Newman o 38.\u00ba doutor da Igreja universal.<\/p>\n

A decis\u00e3o de conferir o t\u00edtulo ao santo ingl\u00eas do s\u00e9culo XIX \u2014 um antigo padre anglicano que se converteu ao catolicismo \u2014 foi confirmada durante a reuni\u00e3o matinal do Papa com o Cardeal Marcello Semeraro, prefeito do Dicast\u00e9rio para as Causas dos Santos. <\/p>\n

Segundo a Sala de Imprensa da Santa S\u00e9, o Santo Padre aceitou o \u201cparecer afirmativo\u201d dos membros do dicast\u00e9rio e da sess\u00e3o plen\u00e1ria de cardeais e bispos relativamente ao fundador do Orat\u00f3rio de S\u00e3o Filipe N\u00e9ri em Inglaterra.  <\/p>\n

Nos 2.000 anos de hist\u00f3ria da Igreja, apenas outros 37 santos, incluindo quatro mulheres, receberam o t\u00edtulo de doutor. O t\u00edtulo \u00e9 concedido em reconhecimento da contribui\u00e7\u00e3o significativa de um santo j\u00e1 canonizado para o avan\u00e7o do conhecimento da doutrina, teologia ou espiritualidade da Igreja.   <\/p>\n

O Vaticano ainda n\u00e3o confirmou a data da proclama\u00e7\u00e3o formal de Newman como doutor da Igreja.<\/p>\n

Nascido em Londres e batizado na Igreja da Inglaterra em 1801, Newman foi um padre, te\u00f3logo e escritor anglicano popular e respeitado entre os seus pares antes da sua convers\u00e3o ao catolicismo.<\/p>\n

Em 1845, Newman pediu ao seu amigo Beato Dominic Barberi, um padre passionista italiano que vivia em Inglaterra, que o recebesse na Igreja Cat\u00f3lica.<\/p>\n

Foi ordenado padre cat\u00f3lico em 1847 e mais tarde nomeado cardeal pelo Papa Le\u00e3o XIII em 1879. Escolheu o lema \u201cCor ad cor loquitur\u201d (\u201cO cora\u00e7\u00e3o fala ao cora\u00e7\u00e3o\u201d) como express\u00e3o da sua convers\u00e3o no seu pr\u00f3prio cora\u00e7\u00e3o, atrav\u00e9s do cora\u00e7\u00e3o de Deus.    <\/p>\n

Como cat\u00f3lico, Newman aprofundou e contribuiu para o ensinamento da Igreja, gra\u00e7as ao seu vasto conhecimento de teologia e \u00e0 sua perspic\u00e1cia sobre os tempos modernos, fundamentada no Evangelho.<\/p>\n

O seu corpo de trabalho inclui 40 livros e mais de 20.000 cartas.<\/p>\n

Newman morreu em Edgbaston, Inglaterra, em 1890. Foi beatificado pelo Papa Bento XVI a 19 de setembro de 2010 e canonizado pelo Papa Francisco a 13 de outubro de 2019.<\/p>\n
