O Cardeal Robert McElroy, o arcebispo de Washington, D.C., de 71 anos, foi diagnosticado com cancro, mas tem um bom progn\u00f3stico de recupera\u00e7\u00e3o, de acordo com um an\u00fancio da arquidiocese<\/a> na manh\u00e3 de quarta-feira, 5 de novembro. <\/p>\n

De acordo com a declara\u00e7\u00e3o, o cancro de McElroy ser\u00e1 removido cirurgicamente a 13 de novembro e os seus m\u00e9dicos \u201cest\u00e3o em consenso de que o seu progn\u00f3stico \u00e9 muito bom\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cO diagn\u00f3stico preciso \u00e9 que o Cardeal McElroy tem um lipossarcoma bem diferenciado, que \u00e9 um cancro n\u00e3o agressivo que tende a n\u00e3o metastizar\u201d, dizia a declara\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/p>\n

\u201cOntem \u00e0 noite, o Cardeal McElroy falou com os padres da arquidiocese sobre este diagn\u00f3stico durante a sua convocat\u00f3ria anual e disse-lhes que \u2018estou em paz com este desafio e espero e acredito que, pela gra\u00e7a de Deus, serei arcebispo de Washington por muitos anos. Pe\u00e7o as vossas ora\u00e7\u00f5es e apoio nestes dias e planeio retomar as fun\u00e7\u00f5es completas duas semanas ap\u00f3s a cirurgia\u2019\u201d, acrescentou a declara\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/p>\n

McElroy foi instalado como arcebispo<\/a> da capital da na\u00e7\u00e3o a 11 de mar\u00e7o, ap\u00f3s uma nomea\u00e7\u00e3o pelo Papa Francisco. Foi feito cardeal em 2022 enquanto servia como bispo da Diocese de San Diego.<\/p>\n

O cardeal, que possui um doutoramento em teologia sagrada e um doutoramento em ci\u00eancia pol\u00edtica, assumiu o seu cargo menos de dois meses depois de o Presidente Donald Trump ter tomado posse como presidente pela segunda vez.<\/p>\n

Embora tenha desejado felicidades ao presidente, McElroy criticou fortemente <\/a>o plano de Trump para deporta\u00e7\u00f5es em massa de imigrantes que est\u00e3o ilegalmente no pa\u00eds, dizendo a 6 de janeiro que \u201csomos chamados sempre a ter um sentido da dignidade de cada pessoa humana\u201d.<\/p>\n

O cardeal referiu-se \u00e0s deporta\u00e7\u00f5es em curso como \u201cum ataque sem precedentes a milh\u00f5es de homens, mulheres e fam\u00edlias imigrantes no nosso meio\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cEstamos a testemunhar um ataque governamental abrangente concebido para produzir medo e terror entre milh\u00f5es de homens e mulheres que, atrav\u00e9s da sua presen\u00e7a na nossa na\u00e7\u00e3o, t\u00eam nutrido precisamente os la\u00e7os religiosos, culturais, comunit\u00e1rios e familiares que est\u00e3o mais desgastados e mais valiosos neste momento da hist\u00f3ria do nosso pa\u00eds\u201d, disse McElroy.<\/p>\n

Os coment\u00e1rios de McElroy surgiram enquanto a Confer\u00eancia dos Bispos Cat\u00f3licos dos Estados Unidos continuava a entrar em conflito com a administra\u00e7\u00e3o Trump sobre a sua pol\u00edtica de imigra\u00e7\u00e3o.
