A Arquidiocese de Nova Iorque pagar\u00e1 quase um ter\u00e7o de mil milh\u00f5es de d\u00f3lares a v\u00edtimas de abuso sexual por parte do clero, disse o Cardeal Timothy Dolan esta semana, oferecendo um dos maiores pagamentos da Igreja na hist\u00f3ria dos EUA, a fim de compensar o \u201chorror do abuso\u201d pelo clero local.  <\/p>\n

O Cardeal Dolan disse que a arquidiocese pagar\u00e1 \u201cum total de mais de $300 milh\u00f5es\u201d aos sobreviventes de abusos como parte de um \u201cacordo global\u201d com as v\u00edtimas. <\/p>\n

A arquidiocese tomou \u201cuma s\u00e9rie de decis\u00f5es financeiras muito dif\u00edceis\u201d para ajudar a financiar o acordo, disse o Cardeal Dolan na declara\u00e7\u00e3o de 8 de dezembro<\/a>, incluindo despedimentos de pessoal e uma redu\u00e7\u00e3o de 10% no or\u00e7amento operacional da arquidiocese. <\/p>\n

\u201cEstamos tamb\u00e9m a trabalhar para finalizar a venda de ativos imobili\u00e1rios significativos\u201d, disse o prelado. Ele apontou para a recente venda da antiga sede arquidiocesana em Manhattan, que foi comprada por um grupo de desenvolvimento por cerca de $100 milh\u00f5es. <\/p>\n

O acordo surge uma d\u00e9cada ap\u00f3s a funda\u00e7\u00e3o do Programa Independente de Reconcilia\u00e7\u00e3o e Compensa\u00e7\u00e3o da arquidiocese, que procura \u201cpromover a cura e trazer um desfecho\u201d ao oferecer compensa\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e0s v\u00edtimas de abuso por parte do clero.<\/p>\n

O Cardeal Dolan disse que o acordo surgiu ap\u00f3s conversa\u00e7\u00f5es com um mediador independente que ajudou a negociar um \u201cacordo global\u201d, um processo que permite a resolu\u00e7\u00e3o r\u00e1pida de casos, evitando longos processos judiciais. <\/p>\n

A arquidiocese e os advogados est\u00e3o a trabalhar com o juiz reformado da Calif\u00f3rnia, Daniel Buckley, para ajudar a mediar o processo. Buckley ajudou no ano passado a mediar o pr\u00f3prio acordo de abuso da arquidiocese de Los Angeles,<\/a> um que viu um acordo recorde de $880 milh\u00f5es para sobreviventes de abusos. <\/p>\n

O Cardeal Dolan disse que a arquidiocese procura garantir \u201ca maior compensa\u00e7\u00e3o poss\u00edvel \u00e0s v\u00edtimas sobreviventes\u201d, enquanto continua a prosseguir \u201cminist\u00e9rios vitais para o bem das nossas par\u00f3quias, fam\u00edlias e comunidades\u201d.<\/p>\n

O cardeal tamb\u00e9m disse que a arquidiocese ainda est\u00e1 envolvida num conflito legal com a sua seguradora de longa data, a Chubb. Em 2024, a arquidiocese iniciou um processo judicial contra a Chubb,<\/a> alegando que a corpora\u00e7\u00e3o estava a \u201ctentar evitar a sua obriga\u00e7\u00e3o contratual legal e moral\u201d de pagar indemniza\u00e7\u00f5es financeiras \u00e0s v\u00edtimas de abuso sexual.<\/p>\n

\u201cApesar de aceitar milh\u00f5es em pr\u00e9mios da arquidiocese, a Chubb recusou-se firmemente a honrar as ap\u00f3lices que emitiu\u201d, disse Dolan a 8 de dezembro. <\/p>\n

O Cardeal Dolan exortou os fi\u00e9is a rezar \u201cpelas v\u00edtimas sobreviventes, pelas suas fam\u00edlias e por todos os que experienciaram o horror do abuso\u201d.<\/p>\n

O pagamento de Nova Iorque surge ao mesmo tempo que um juiz federal na Louisiana aprovou um acordo de $230 milh\u00f5es a ser pago \u00e0s v\u00edtimas de abuso pela Arquidiocese de Nova Orle\u00e3es. A arquidiocese tinha concordado com o pagamento em outubro.<\/a><\/p>\n

O pagamento de quase $1 mil milh\u00f5es da arquidiocese de Los Angeles continua a ser o recorde dos EUA para um acordo de abuso por uma arquidiocese ou diocese. O recorde oficial para um acordo diocesano \u00e9 $323 million<\/a>, pela Diocese de Rockville Centre em Nova Iorque, embora n\u00e3o seja claro se o pagamento da arquidiocese de Nova Iorque acabar\u00e1 por superar esse valor. <\/p>\n
