Mohr wrote the words as a poem in 1816, in Mariapfarr in the Lungau, and Gruber set them to music on Christmas Eve 1818. That same night the two of them sang it together for the first time, at the Christmas Mass in the church of St Nicholas in Oberndorf, near Salzburg.
