The United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) will formally prohibit men from competing in women\u2019s sports amid the Trump administration\u2019s efforts to roll back transgender policies throughout the United States. <\/p>\n

USOPC said in an email to Olympic groups and stakeholders on Tuesday that leaders had \u201cengaged in a series of respectful and constructive conversations\u201d with federal leaders after President Donald Trump\u2019s February executive order<\/a> that moved to \u201cprotect opportunities for women and girls to compete in safe and fair sports.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cUnder the Trump administration we will defend the proud tradition of female athletes and we will not allow men to beat up, injure, and cheat our women and our girls,\u201d Trump said when signing the order. \u201cFrom now on, women\u2019s sports will be only for women.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a federally chartered organization, we have an obligation to comply with federal expectations,\u201d USOPC said in its email this week. <\/p>\n

The committee said it had updated its policies to ensure \u201cfair and safe competition environments for women.\u201d <\/p>\n

All Olympic national governing bodies will be required to update their rules in line with the new guidance, the national committee said. <\/p>\n

The decision drew criticism from advocates of letting men who identify as women compete in women\u2019s sporting events. The National Women\u2019s Law Center described the move as a \u201ccruel effort\u201d to block men from women\u2019s competitions. <\/p>\n

Trump had earlier vowed that his February executive order would block men\u2019s participation in women\u2019s Olympic sports in 2028, when the Summer Olympics will be held in Los Angeles. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re just not going to let it happen,\u201d the president said when signing the measure. <\/p>\n

The Trump administration has taken an aggressive approach to rolling back years\u2019 worth of transgender policies throughout the country. In May, for instance, the White House launched an inquiry<\/a> into hospitals that have provided transgender drugs and performed transgender surgeries on minors.<\/p>\n

The administration in April also directed the U.S. National Institutes of Health to begin a research initiative<\/a> to study \u201cregret\u201d among individuals who undergo so-called gender transition treatments.<\/p>\n

The U.S. bishops earlier this year praised Trump\u2019s efforts to keep men out of women\u2019s sports.<\/a> Catholic leadership in recent years has grown increasingly critical of transgender ideology, with Pope Francis in 2023 describing transgenderism as \u201cone of the most dangerous ideological colonizations<\/a>\u201d of the present day. <\/p>\n

Republican officials have been similarly energized by the Trump administration\u2019s moves on transgenderism. On Tuesday numerous attorneys general demanded<\/a> that the National Collegiate Athletic Association \u201creinstate the records, titles, awards, and recognitions rightfully earned by top female athletes\u201d that have been stripped by men allowed to compete in women\u2019s leagues. <\/p>\n

\u201cThese women champions earned those records. They trained, competed, and won, only to have their victories stolen by male athletes,\u201d Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey said in a press release. <\/p>\n

\u201cBiological reality matters,\u201d the prosecutor said, describing men competing against women as \u201ca grave injustice\u201d that \u201cundermines the integrity of women\u2019s sports.\u201d<\/p>\n

The U.S. Supreme Court, meanwhile, said earlier this month<\/a> that during its next term it will consider two cases addressing whether or not states can ban males from participating in female sports leagues.<\/p>\n

Both cases arose from lawsuits brought by young men who identify as female and who sued Idaho and West Virginia over their respective bans on boys competing in girls\u2019 sports.<\/p>\n
