Instead, let us open our hearts and listen to what the Lord tells us, so that we may be filled with a greater trust and a deeper peace. As Pope Francis has reminded us, the guardian angel is a \"traveling companion,\" a \"God's ambassador\" who accompanies each one of us on the path of life.\u00b9 Let us learn more about these companions God has given us.<\/p>\n
Before God laid the foundations of the world, when the morning stars sang together, the angels were there, shouting for joy.\u00b3 They are not eternal beings like God; they are creatures, brought into existence by His powerful and loving command. The Apostle Paul tells us in his letter to the Colossians that \"by Him all things were created that are in Heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers\".\u2074 They are, as the Church teaches, \"purely spiritual creatures\" who have intelligence and a will to choose they do not have physical bodies in their natural state.\u2075<\/p>\n
Their very name gives us a clue to their purpose. The word \"angel\" comes from the Greek word angelos<\/em>, which simply means \"messenger\".\u2074 This is their first and most fundamental mission: to be a living bridge between Heaven and earth. They are sent by God to carry His messages of guidance, comfort, warning, and, most importantly, salvation to His children.\u2078 They are the bearers of Good News, from the announcement to the shepherds of a Savior's birth to the message of the Resurrection at the empty tomb.\u2077<\/p>\n The creation of angels is not just a fact about God's power; it is a powerful revelation of His character. A God who creates messengers is a God who desires to communicate. He is not a distant, silent monarch a Father who leans down to speak to His children, to guide their steps, and to make His will known. The existence of angels is a testament to the relational heart of God.<\/p>\n Yet, the most beautiful truth, the one that should fill our hearts with the greatest comfort, is that angels were created not just for God's glory also for our sake. The Letter to the Hebrews asks a question that is really an answer: \"Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?\".\u00b9\u00b9 They are God's secret agents of love, His hands and feet in the world, often working unseen to protect us from harm, deliver us from trouble, and guide us in our own ministries.\u2074 The Psalmist sings of this hidden protection, \"The angel of the LORD encamps all around those who fear Him, and delivers them\".\u2078<\/p>\n Above all else, angels exist to worship God. When three visitors came to Abraham's tent by the oaks of Mamre, he did not realize at first that he was speaking with the Lord and two angels.\u00b9\u2075 He simply offered them the hospitality due to any traveler. The same was true for his nephew, Lot, in the city of Sodom.\u2077 The Letter to the Hebrews reminds us that this can still happen, urging us, \"Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it\".\u00b9\u2076 This teaches us a beautiful truth about God's closeness, His presence in the ordinary events of our lives. It calls us to see the sacredness in every encounter and to treat every person with the dignity and love due to a messenger from Heaven.<\/p>\n At other times an angel's appearance is so glorious and overwhelming that it strikes holy fear into the hearts of those who see them.\u00b9\u2074 When the prophet Daniel encountered an angelic being, he described a figure whose \"body was like beryl, his face like the appearance of lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like the gleam of burnished bronze, and the sound of his words like the sound of a multitude\".\u00b9\u2074 The women at the tomb of Jesus saw an angel whose \"appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow\" \u9a6c\u592a\u798f\u97f3 28:3<\/a>. It is no wonder that the first words an angel often speaks are, \"Do not be afraid\".\u2077 These glorious appearances teach us about God's transcendence, His awesome power and majesty. The variety of angelic appearances, from the ordinary man to the glorious warrior to the symbolic creature, is not a contradiction. It is a sign of God's wisdom as a teacher, tailoring each revelation to the message and the moment, and revealing to us, little by little, the infinite facets of His mystery and majesty.<\/p>\n Just as a great and loving family has different members with different roles, or a well-ordered army has soldiers of different ranks, the Bible suggests that the vast company of heaven is also beautifully ordered.\u00b3 Theologians throughout the history of the like St. Thomas Aquinas, have reflected on this heavenly hierarchy, not out of idle curiosity to better appreciate the wisdom and harmony of God's creation.\u2079 Although we must be humble and cautious, recognizing that our knowledge is limited and we should not create rigid systems that Scripture does not demand, we can see different \"choirs\" or types of angels mentioned in the Word of God.\u00b3<\/p>\n \u5728\u6700\u9760\u8fd1\u4e0a\u5e1d\u5b9d\u5ea7\u7684\u5730\u65b9\uff0c\u6211\u4eec\u53d1\u73b0\u4e86\u90a3\u4e9b\u4e3b\u8981\u89d2\u8272\u662f\u656c\u62dc\u548c\u5b88\u62a4\u795e\u5723\u5723\u6d01\u7684\u5929\u4f7f\u3002\u5148\u77e5\u4ee5\u8d5b\u4e9a\u63d0\u5230\u4e86 \u6492\u62c9\u5f17<\/strong>, whose name means \"the burning ones,\" are mentioned by the prophet Isaiah. Scripture gives us the names of two of these mighty leaders. \u52a0\u767e\u5217<\/strong>, whose name means \"God is my strength,\" was the messenger of the Incarnation, bringing the most joyful news in all of history to the Blessed Virgin Mary.\u00b2\u2070<\/p>\n \u7c73\u8fe6\u52d2<\/strong>, whose name is a question\u2014\"Who is like God?\"\u2014is the great warrior prince, the defender of God's people who leads the heavenly armies in the spiritual battle against Satan and the forces of evil.\u00b9\u00b2<\/p>\n Beyond these specific choirs, there is a vast, uncountable number of angels, a \"multitude of the heavenly host\" that is almost too great for us to imagine.\u2074 The prophet Daniel saw a vision of \"ten thousand times ten thousand\" standing before God. These are the angels who are most directly involved in our daily lives.
