It shows Saleh with Billah Al-Assali, who performed a chant that calls Christ \u201ca creation\u201d and says that he came \u201cbearing good news of Mohammad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The footage sparked<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/www.facebook.com\/share\/p\/1BHnonJBLJ\/__;!!GfxeEQ!TsUjRttfTytkB0DcRwYs_Q05gnuHVTQiaIu-bGZuev7GLoQf2rrU-aZm9AzQThJpt2QMe6aPQ4PGWg$\" target=\"null\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"> a backlash on social media,<\/a> drawing criticism from Christians as well as Muslims who voiced disapproval and described it as a \u201cprovocation.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Desecrated church in Philippines reopens&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<p>More than a thousand people participated in a Mass held at the newly reopened St. John the Baptist Church in the town of Jimenez in Misamis Occidental province in the Philippines on Aug. 16, the Catholic Bishops\u2019 Conference of the Philippines\u2019 (CBCP) news service <a href=\"https:\/\/cbcpnews.net\/cbcpnews\/misamis-occidental-church-reopens-after-closure-over-desecration-incident\/\" target=\"null\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">\u62a5\u9053<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The 19th-century church in the Philippines was temporarily closed after Christine Medalla, a 28-year-old vlogger, allegedly spat into the font, an action Ozamiz\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucanews.com\/directory\/bishops\/archbishop-jumoad\/839?utm_source=in-pg-referral&amp;utm_medium=in-pg-referral&amp;utm_campaign=in-pg-referral&amp;utm_id=in-pg-referral\" target=\"null\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Archbishop Martin Jumoad<\/a> described as a \u201cgrave act of sacrilege.\u201d According to Crux, Medalla denied the allegation.<\/p>\n<p>Jumoad presided at the Mass and the rite of reopening and reconciliation. \u201cWith hearts full of faith, the parishioners \u2026 gathered in thanksgiving as our beloved parish church was reopened and reconsecrated,\u201d the church said in its statement.<\/p>\n<h2>Korean bishop remembered for humility, love for the poor dies at 63<\/h2>\n<p>An auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Seoul, Korea, known for his humility, frugality, and love for the poor, died on Aug. 15 at 63 of bile duct cancer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucanews.com\/news\/korean-auxiliary-bishop-dies-of-cancer-at-63\/109999&nbsp;\" target=\"null\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">UCA News reported<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>As head of the archdiocesan social service ministry, Yu led the Church\u2019s outreach to those in need and spent time on the front lines feeding the poor and ministering to their needs. He frequently visited the Church\u2019s social welfare facilities, listening to stories of suffering, and visited Catholics who were homeless, bringing them the sacraments and praying the rosary with them on the streets.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Before his death, Yu said: \u201cThere were many things I wanted to do for the poor, but I am heartbroken that I cannot be there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yu, who wrote three books, was born in Seoul in 1962 and graduated from the Catholic University of Korea. After studying at the University of Wurzburg, Germany, and completing his military service, he was ordained a priest in 1992 in Seoul and earned a doctorate in theology from the Sankt Georgen Graduate School of Philosophy and Theology in Frankfurt, Germany.\u00a0Pope Francis appointed him auxiliary bishop of the Seoul Archdiocese in 2013. Known for his modest lifestyle, Yu kept a low profile and reportedly drove the same small, old car for decades.<\/p>\n<h2>African press group calls for development of ethical guidelines for use of AI<\/h2>\n<p>A meeting of the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/UcapOfficialPage\" target=\"null\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Union of the African Catholic Press<\/a> (UCAP) ended with a call for media institutions in Africa to develop ethical guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence (AI).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aciafrica.org\/news\/17153\/ucap-2025-congress-ends-with-call-on-african-media-institutions-to-establish-ethical-guidelines-for-use-of-ai\" target=\"null\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">\u636eACI Africa\u62a5\u9053<\/a>, CNA\u2019s news partner in Africa, over 100 Catholic journalists, speakers, and content creators gathered at the UCAP congress in Accra, Ghana, Aug. 10\u201317 from more than 19 African nations to reflect on the theme \u201cBalancing Technological Progress and the Preservation of Human Values in the Age of Artificial Intelligence (AI).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A series of resolutions and recommendations were shared with ACI Africa on Aug. 20 in which UCAP members \u201cemphasized that technological progress must never take precedence over the human person and that the Church and media professionals alike have a responsibility to ensure that AI serves the common good.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Police called to Catholic college in Bangladesh due to fear of protesting teachers<\/h2>\n<p>Administrators of a Catholic college in the Mymensigh Diocese in Bangladesh sought police protection last week when teachers and students threatened a public demonstration on campus.<\/p>\n<p>Father Thadius Hembram, head of Notre Dame College, run by the priests of Holy Cross Congregation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucanews.com\/news\/bangladesh-police-guard-catholic-college-over-security-concerns\/109996\" target=\"null\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">told UCA News on Aug. 18<\/a> that he wrote to the district police chief saying: \u201cWe fear harm to life and property of the college. Therefore, we are requesting you to help us maintain law and order until the situation normalizes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In July, a group of 11 teachers issued a statement announcing a boycott of classes until demands were met. The college reportedly promised to fulfill the demands but the issues have not been resolved. One college official has blamed \u201cpro-Islamist\u201d teachers who are targeting the institution. Bangladesh is a majority-Muslim country.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Although protestors postponed their planned Aug. 17 event, Hembram said the ongoing situation has been \u201cchaotic and tense\u201d and was \u201cdisrupting the academic environment of the institute.\u201d He also said a committee has been formed to investigate the situation and next steps will be decided based on the committee\u2019s recommendations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Bishop: Attacks on Ireland\u2019s Indian community are shameful, betray \u2018true irish welcome\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Bishop Brendan Leahy of Limerick in Ireland has called recent attacks on the Indian community in Ireland \u201cshameful\u201d and a \u201cdreadful misrepresentation of the true Irish welcome.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Leahy made the comments at a recent retreat for the Syro-Malabar community in which hundreds of people traveled to Limerick from across the country, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicbishops.ie\/2025\/08\/18\/bishop-leahy-it-is-shameful-for-irish-people-to-be-hearing-about-attacks-on-indian-south-asian-community\/\" target=\"null\" class=\"null\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">according to the Irish Catholic Bishops\u2019 Conference<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The bishop also expressed his admiration for the Syro-Malabar Church in Ireland. \u201cI always admire your wonderful commitment to gathering together for a time of prayer and reflection, supporting and encouraging one another in the company of your beautiful families and friends.
