In what some are calling \u201cthe Charlie Kirk effect,\u201d people across the nation, including many college students who are not ordinarily churchgoers, have decided to go to church since the assassination last week of the conservative Christian political activist Charlie Kirk.<\/p>\n

Matt Zerrusen, co-founder of Newman Ministry<\/a>, a Catholic nonprofit that operates on about 250 campuses nationwide, told CNA he has spoken with Catholic college ministry leaders throughout the country over the last few days, and \u201cevery one of them told me they\u2019ve seen bigger crowds\u201d at Masses and lots of people \u201cthey\u2019ve never seen before.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have not talked to anyone who has not seen an increase in Mass attendance,\u201d Zerrusen said. \u201cSome schools are reporting increases of 15%.\u201d<\/p>\n

He told CNA that many more college students are also asking for spiritual direction. \u201cSo many people are asking \u2018What do I do?\u2019 What is evil? How does God allow this?\u201d Zerrusen said. \u201cThey are asking so many basic questions.\u201d<\/p>\n

One priest at a large state school in the Northeast told Zerrusen he spoke over the weekend with 15 young men he had never seen before who sought him out for faith advice. <\/p>\n

Zerrusen said the spiritual \u201crevival\u201d Kirk\u2019s death has amplified comes amid one he has been observing for months.<\/p>\n

He pointed out that more than 400 students at Texas A&M University in College Station are attending the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) class at St. Mary\u2019s Catholic Center near campus.<\/p>\n

Social media users say Kirk inspired them to go to church<\/h2>\n

Since Kirk\u2019s death on Sept. 10<\/a>, social media platforms X, TikTok, and Instagram have been flooded with posts from users saying they plan to go to church for the first time or to return to church, thanks to Kirk\u2019s influence.<\/p>\n

With more than half a million followers, X user @TONYxTWO posted a TikTok video<\/a> on Sunday showing a young man saying he had to park \u201cfive blocks away from church because everyone wants to come now! Amen. Thank you, Jesus. Thank you, Charlie.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another X user who calls herself a \u201cDevout Aggie\u201d and \u201cCatholic\u201d who has nearly 15,000 followers said her son, who \u201cis not a churchgoer,\u201d asked her<\/a> to go to Mass with him over the weekend, attributing it to \u201cthe Charlie Kirk effect.\u201d <\/p>\n

The vicar general for the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City, Father John Evans, said on Monday that he had noticed a \u201cslight increase\u201d in Mass attendance over the weekend, but what was more unusual was what happened in the days immediately after Kirk\u2019s assassination.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople were coming together before Sunday, praying privately, some in groups, praying the rosary, and different prayers of different sorts,\u201d Evans told KSL-TV in Utah<\/a>.<\/p>\n
