Prayer for Protection
Missionaries often serve in places that are unfamiliar and sometimes unsafe. We pray for God’s hand of protection over them, guarding them from physical harm and spiritual attack. Their safety is a deep concern for all who love them.
Almighty God, our fortress and our shield, we lift up our missionaries to You. You are their hiding place and their protector. We ask that You would place a hedge of protection around them, guarding them from sickness, accidents, and any person or force that intends them harm. When they travel on roads, by air, or on foot, be their guide and their guard.
Watch over their homes and their families, making their dwelling a place of peace and safety. In moments of fear or uncertainty, calm their hearts and remind them of Your constant presence. Protect them not only from visible dangers but also from the unseen spiritual battles they face. Guard their minds from discouragement and their hearts from the lies of the enemy.
Let them feel the powerful reassurance of Your promise in Psalm 91:4, “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.” May they walk in confidence, not in fear, knowing that they are held securely in Your hands. Cover them with Your grace and keep them safe for Your glory, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
This prayer acknowledges that true security is found not in the absence of danger, but in the presence of God. By entrusting our missionaries to His care, we express our faith in His sovereign power to keep His children safe.
Prayer for Courage
Facing a new culture, language, and potential opposition requires immense bravery. This a prayer for a supernatural courage that overcomes fear and empowers missionaries to be bold witnesses for Christ, no matter the circumstances they face.
Lord of Hosts, we pray for a spirit of unshakeable courage to fill every missionary. You have not given them a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. When they feel their own strength failing, remind them that their courage comes from You.
When they are tempted to stay silent, give them the boldness to speak the truth in love. When they feel lonely or isolated, fill them with the assurance that You are with them. When they face opposition or ridicule, help them to stand firm, rooted in their identity as Your beloved child. Let them not be intimidated by hardship, but instead, let it refine their faith and deepen their dependence on You.
Help them to be brave enough to build relationships, to admit when they are wrong, and to love people who are difficult to love. May the words of Joshua 1:9 be a constant source of strength: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Fill them with a holy confidence that is humble, yet powerful, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Our prayer is that God would replace their feelings of fear and timidity with a profound sense of His strength. This divine courage enables them to persevere and faithfully carry out the work they have been called to do.
Prayer for Clear Communication
Breaking through language and cultural barriers is one of the greatest challenges for missionaries. We pray for them to not only learn the language but to communicate the heart of the Gospel in a way that truly connects with people.
Father of all nations, we ask for Your grace upon our missionaries as they seek to communicate. We pray for supernatural help in their language learning. Grant them quick understanding, good memory for vocabulary, and the ability to grasp the subtle nuances of the local culture.
But Lord, we pray for more than just correct grammar. We pray that You would anoint their words. May their conversations be filled with grace and seasoned with wisdom, as it says in Colossians 4:6. Help them to listen well, to understand the heart-needs of the people they serve, and to share the story of Jesus with clarity, compassion, and power.
Let their lives be a clear message of Your love, so that their actions and their words are in perfect harmony. When they speak, may the Holy Spirit open the ears and hearts of their listeners, so that the message of salvation is not just heard, but deeply understood and received. Bridge every gap and overcome every barrier for the sake of Your Gospel, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
This prayer recognizes that true communication is a work of the Holy Spirit. We ask God to make the message of His love understandable, overcoming any human limitations, so that it can take root in people’s hearts.
Prayer for Health and Strength
The demands of ministry can take a toll on a missionary’s physical, mental, and emotional health. We pray for their total well-being, asking God to sustain them with His strength and grant them good health to continue their work.
Heavenly Father, our Healer and Sustainer, we bring our beloved missionaries before You and ask for their health and strength. In a world full of new foods, climates, and diseases, we pray that You would protect their bodies and keep them physically well.
We also pray for their emotional and mental strength. Shield their minds from the stress, anxiety, and emotional exhaustion that can come with cross-cultural life and ministry. When they feel weary, be their rest. When they feel overwhelmed, be their peace. Renew their energy day by day, so they can serve not from a place of depletion, but from the overflow of Your strength.
Remind them that their body is a temple of the Holy Spirit and encourage them to find rhythms of rest and self-care. We lean on Your promise in Isaiah 40:29, “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.” May they experience this truth in a profound way, waking each morning renewed in body, mind, and spirit for the day ahead, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
We entrust our missionaries to the God who cares for every part of their being. This prayer is an appeal for the holistic health that will allow them to serve joyfully and effectively for the long haul.
Prayer for Their Families
Missionaries often serve far from their children, parents, and extended family. We pray for these families, both for those who are on the field with them and for the loved ones they have left behind at home.
Gracious God, who sets the lonely in families, we lift up the families of our missionaries. For those who have children with them on the field, we pray for a special measure of Your grace. Help their children to adjust, to make friends, and to find joy in their unique life. Protect the marriage of the missionary couple, guarding it against the stresses of ministry and life abroad.
We also pray fervently for the family members back home—the aging parents, the siblings, the grown children. Ease the ache of separation in their hearts. Grant them peace and assurance, and protect them from undo worry. Help them to feel connected across the miles and to be a source of encouragement and support. Remind them all of Your words in Philippians 1:3-4, “I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy.”
Lord, be the Father to the parentless, the Son to the aging, and a constant companion to the lonely. Let every family member, whether near or far, feel cherished, valued, and covered in prayer, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
This prayer wraps the entire family unit in God’s care. We ask for His peace to guard hearts separated by distance and for His strength to hold them together in unity and love, no matter where they are.
Prayer for Spiritual Renewal
It is easy for a missionary, surrounded by spiritual work, to neglect their own personal relationship with God. This is a prayer for their spiritual vitality, that their own souls would be refreshed and their love for Jesus would remain strong.
Lord Jesus, the Living Water, we pray for the spiritual renewal of our missionaries. In the busyness of serving others, it can be easy to become spiritually dry. We ask that You would draw them close to Yourself each day. Stir in their hearts a deep hunger for Your Word and a consistent desire for prayer.
Protect them from the danger of ministry becoming just a job. Keep their hearts tender and their first love for You burning brightly. When they feel drained from pouring into others, pour Your Spirit back into them. Refresh their souls with moments of quiet rest, profound worship, and sweet fellowship with You. Help them to remember that their primary identity is not “missionary,” but “Your beloved child.”
Let them not grow weary in doing good, but be renewed day by day, as 2 Corinthians 4:16 says, “Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.” Fill them to overflowing with Your peace, joy, and love so they can give from a full cup, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
This prayer focuses on the most vital part of a missionary’s life: their personal walk with God. We ask that God would keep their relationship with Him vibrant, because all fruitful ministry flows from that source.
Prayer for Divine Wisdom
Missionaries constantly face complex situations that require godly wisdom. They must navigate cultural differences, relational conflicts, and strategic decisions. We pray for God to grant them the wisdom that comes only from Him.
God of all Wisdom, we ask You to pour out Your wisdom upon our missionaries. They face daily decisions, big and small, that have a lasting impact. Please guide their thoughts, their plans, and their conversations. Help them to see situations not just from a human perspective, but from Your eternal one.
Grant them wisdom in how to manage their time and resources. Give them insight into the culture so they can minister effectively and without causing offense. When conflicts arise or when they don’t know the next step to take, we pray they would turn to You first. Fulfill Your promise in James 1:5, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”
Protect them from foolish choices made in haste or in their own strength. May their leadership be marked by humility, discernment, and a deep reliance on Your guidance. Let every decision they make bring glory to You and advance Your Kingdom, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
We ask God to be the missionaries’ constant guide. This prayer is an expression of trust that He will provide the discernment they need to navigate every challenge and opportunity with grace and truth.
Prayer for Fruitful Relationships
Ministry is built on relationships. Without trust and genuine connection, the Gospel message can fall on deaf ears. This is a prayer for missionaries to build deep, authentic, and fruitful relationships with the people they serve.
Relational God, You created us for community, and we pray that You would bless our missionaries with rich and fruitful relationships. Help them to move beyond surface-level acquaintance and build deep bonds of trust and friendship with the local people. Break down walls of suspicion, prejudice, and cultural misunderstanding.
Give our missionaries a genuine, Christ-like love for the people they are there to serve. Grant them the grace to be excellent listeners, patient friends, and trustworthy confidants. May their homes be places of warm hospitality and their lives be examples of Your unconditional love. Through these authentic friendships, we pray that You would open doors for the Gospel.
Let them live out the command of 1 Peter 4:8, “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” May the love they show be so compelling and so different that people are drawn to the source of that love—You, Lord Jesus. Bless their friendships and use them for Your eternal purposes, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
We pray for the Holy Spirit to create a powerful bond of love between missionaries and the local community. It is through these genuine connections that hearts are softened and prepared to hear the good news of Jesus.
Prayer for Patience and Endurance
Missionary work is often a slow, long-term marathon, not a sprint. We pray for the crucial virtues of patience and endurance, so that they will not give up or become discouraged when results are not immediate.
Lord of the Harvest, we pray for patience and endurance for our missionaries. The work of planting seeds of faith is often slow, and the harvest may take years to appear. When they are tempted to feel discouraged by a lack of visible fruit, please strengthen their hearts.
Help them to persevere through seasons of difficulty, loneliness, and apparent failure. Grant them a long-term perspective, reminding them that their faithful labor is never in vain in Your eyes. Give them patience with the people they serve, patience with the culture, and patience with themselves as they learn and grow. Fill them with a steady, quiet strength that refuses to give up.
We pray they would hold fast to the encouragement in Galatians 6:9, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Keep their eyes fixed on You, the author and perfecter of their faith, and give them the grace to endure to the end with hope and faithfulness, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
This prayer asks God to instill a deep, abiding strength in our missionaries. We pray they would find their worth in their faithfulness to God, not in immediate results, and continue their work with steadfast hope.
Prayer for God’s Provision
Missionaries depend on God to provide for all their needs, from financial support to the right resources for their ministry. We pray with confidence that God, our Provider, will supply everything they need to live and serve.
Jehovah Jireh, our Provider, we lift up the needs of our missionaries to You. You own the cattle on a thousand hills, and all the resources of the world are Yours. We ask that You would faithfully provide for their every need—financial, material, and logistical.
Open the hearts of Your people to give generously and consistently to support their work. We pray for canceled debts, unexpected gifts, and creative solutions to financial challenges. Provide them with the right ministry resources at just the right time. Whether it is a vehicle for transportation, materials for a class, or a safe place to live, we trust You to supply it.
Help our missionaries to live with open hands, free from the anxiety of provision and full of faith in Your goodness. Let them experience the truth of Philippians 4:19 firsthand: “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” May Your faithful provision be a powerful testimony to all those around them of Your love and care, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
This is a prayer of faith, trusting that the God who called the missionaries will also equip and provide for them. We ask Him to meet their practical needs so they can be free to focus on their ministry.
Prayer for Abundant Joy and Hope
The challenges of missionary life can easily lead to burnout and despair. This is a prayer for a supernatural joy and a resilient hope that are not based on circumstances but are rooted firmly in Christ alone.
God of all Hope, we pray that You would fill our missionaries with an abundance of joy and hope. Protect them from the heaviness of discouragement and the darkness of despair. When they are confronted with brokenness, suffering, and spiritual darkness, be their light.
Let their joy not depend on their circumstances or their ministry successes, but let it be a deep, unshakable joy found only in their relationship with You. Help them to find reasons to laugh, to celebrate small victories, and to see Your goodness all around them. Renew their hope each morning, reminding them that the story is not over and that You will bring Your work to completion.
May the prayer of Romans 15:13 be a reality in their lives: “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Let their hope be a radiant and attractive witness to a watching world that needs a reason to hope, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
This prayer asks for the essential spiritual graces of joy and hope. These gifts from the Spirit will sustain missionaries through the darkest valleys and make their lives a compelling witness to the goodness of God.
Prayer for a Heart of Compassion
It’s possible to serve people without truly loving them. We pray for missionaries to have a heart of deep, Christ-like compassion that fuels their ministry and allows them to see every person through the eyes of Jesus.
Lord Jesus, our compassionate Savior, we pray that You would shape the hearts of our missionaries to be like Yours. Break their hearts for the things that break Your heart. Strip away any frustration, judgment, or indifference that may creep in over time.
Fill them with a profound and tender compassion for every person they meet. Help them to see beyond the surface, to the deep needs, hurts, and longings within each soul. Give them the empathy to weep with those who weep and to rejoice with those who rejoice. May their ministry not be driven by duty, but by a genuine, self-giving love. Let this compassion be the fuel for their prayers, their words, and their service.
Let them embody the spirit of Colossians 3:12, “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” May every action they take be an overflow of a heart that has been captured and transformed by Your incredible love for them, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
This prayer gets to the very core of ministry. We ask God to give our missionaries His heart for the lost and the hurting, because a ministry motivated by genuine love is the most powerful force on earth.
